Will Iran Be Attacked?
By Paul Craig Roberts
February 08, 2012 "Information Clearing House" --- Washington has made tremendous preparations for a military assault on Iran. There is speculation that Washington has called off its two longest running wars--Iraq and Afghanistan--in order to deploy forces against Iran. Two of Washington’s fleets have been assigned to the Persian Gulf along with NATO warships. Missiles have been spread amongst Washington’s Oil Emirate and Middle Eastern puppet states. US troops have been deployed in Israel and Kuwait.
Washington has presented Israel a gift from the hard-pressed american taxpayers of an expensive missile defense system, money spent for Israel when millions of unassisted americans have lost their homes. As no one expects Iran to attack Israel, except in retaliation for an Israeli attack on Iran, the purpose of the missile defense system is to protect Israel from an Iranian response to Israeli aggression against Iran.
Juan Cole has posted on his blog a map showing 44 US military bases surrounding Iran.
When Israel decides its back is against the wall, they will hit Iran with advanced bunker buster bombs we gave them. They will not allow a country that has stated many times that Israel should be wiped out to have atomic weapons. And they will be justified in doing so.
U.S. troops are being deployed in Israel? Combat troops ? How many?
lets face it if iran is attacked, then america should be attacked, many great EMPIRES, failed because they tried to grow too big.
No, it will not be. Israel was traumatized by the reaction to the evil-too-far of Gaza 2009, an attack on Iran would be an evil way-way-too-far. Israel won't risk the blowback of world opinion. BDS would be the result.
The more often and vocally Israel says they will attack Iran, the less likely it is that they do. Basic tactics. If they were to attack Iran they would want to spring it on them suddenly.
I think those are the tactics of yesteryear. These days, I feel it is more about indoctination of the masses to get them to accept, if not outright demand action, not understanding the goal is outright war.
I disagree, currently Israel has agents within Iran. Why would they risk an attack and essentially forfeit their espionage and sabotage efforts currently happening? I think their saber rattling is primarily to draw attention away from what's happening in Iran currently.
Because a land war would remove the need for espionage and would be fought by US troops with US money. Total win win for them.
That said, all of that saber rattling is most likely to acclimatize their people (and ours) to the idea of war with Iran and to perhaps spook Iran into doing something rash and thereby providing the excuse for an invasion.
I think that if the US got involved it would be more along the lines of using cruise missiles and other smart bombs as opposed to actually sending in ground troops.
I believe the US has already come out and said that if war does break out that we will not be involved. And you make a fair point.
Yeah... but they have said many more times that we are 'fully committed' to Israels 'continued existence and security'... If push comes to shove... at the very least... there will be US cruise missiles and drones / bombers involved...
Excerpt from BBC article...
*On the Republican right it is a given that America should be Israel's closest and strongest ally. To not give the country full support is seen as akin to being un-patriotic and un-American.
Michael Scheuer, the former senior CIA agent in charge of the Bin Laden tracking unit, is a maverick in Washington's foreign policy establishment. He doesn't think the close relationship with Israel is in America's best interests.
But in an election year, he says, it would be a very courageous president who would dare to distance himself from Israel.
"I think it is very difficult for an American president, of either party, to say no to Israel, Mr Scheuer says. "He's a political animal and will probably go along with Israel."
And at the end of the day it doesn't make any difference, he says.
"Because in the Persian world, the Muslim world, in the Arab world, if Israel attacks, unless we respond with a declaration of neutrality or a condemnation and a freezing of relations with Israel, they will assume America gave Israel the green flag."*
Unfortunately... things are not that much different for the Dems...
I agree with Mooks from above, if they do get involved it will be through providing the Israelis with weapons.
I believe they will be attacked, yes.
And I do not support it.
I support your support!
