What makes you think being poor is a prerequisite for recognizing that things are f'ed up? This isn't a poor peoples movement. It's about making our country work to the satisfaction of all of its citizens, plenty of wealthy people aren't happy with the current state of affairs either. Not because they're poor, but because things are f'ed up.
I don't think being poor is a prerequisite. Al Shaprton thinks that and goes one step further to suggest it's a poor black thing. Michael Moore thinks it's a poor thing when he lies about his status as a 1%er. Barry Soetoro thinks it's a poor (and black) thing when he gives one of his haves versus have-nots speeches.
from the article 'Among addresses for which information is available, single-family homes listed on those police intake forms have a median value of $305,000 — a far higher number than the $185,400 median value of owner-occupied housing units in the United States.'
This means absolutely nothing.....I live in a place where a dump cannot be bought for under a million! One guess where that is and people who live here are NOT rich. They just have a huge mortgage if they didn't get in the market before the prices of the houses went up sky high.
Yea, me too. I'm shocked the median home value in the US is under 200K!
I should move.
Which means they either a) make enough money to afford the mortgage/rent, or b) have parents who make enough money to afford the mortgage/rent, or c) none of the above - and thus contributed to the housing bubble by buying into the "American Dream, you'll sell your house in 5 years before the ARM kicks in" BS. In any of these scenarios, they needn't be out protesting that which they helped create, right?
We all created this.....through the horrendous apathy.
yea well... that's because a lot of residents from the city come down to protest at wall st. it being in their own borough and all. I don't see the great majority of them as infiltrators but some certainly can be. and the NYPD has been proven to send in undercover officers so I guess it could be possible. But for the most part these people are with us because things still could be better. If you make $300,000 a year, you're still not the 1%. I assure you.
You don't have to assure me of that. While I am not in the 1%, I do make a good living here in the South. My own house is pretty comparable to one of the ones in that slideshow (4200 Sq Ft., 5BR, 3 1/2 Ba, 3 car garage, formal dining, separate den and game room, and finished basement), but I paid less than half of what those houses list for and my property taxes are significantly lower.
I think this means the "get a job, hippie" slogans have to end.
Yeah, there are basically two problems with OWS.
(1) They are all a bunch of unemployed bums looking for a handout.
(2) They are all a bunch of elitist rich people sneering at the common man from their luxury palaces.
Seriously, this isn't a problem it's a strength. Even people that are fairly well off are pissed. That's because it's not about how little we have, it's about how the 1% have unethically gained their wealth. It's so blatantly corrupt that you don't have to be personally suffering from it to hate it.
You don't have to be in poverty to care about the corrupt government.
Meh, I guess you are right - not knowing exactly who lives in these houses... Wouldn't it be interesting to be able to talk to someone who can afford these living conditions though - to see what their angle is in protesting at Occupy movements though since they might be closer to the 1% than the 99%?
Because OWS isn't about hating the rich, it's about hating the corrupt government that takes bribes from them.
If that's true, then they should change their 99% vs 1% message.
Why? When's the last time you saw middle class citizens lobbying congressmen?
They don't have anywhere near the funds necessary to have a say.
