Samantha Bee reported on OWS' very own class division. While the show is comical in nature, it can also be very scathing. Samantha was able to ask those that she interviewed about the ghetto inside OWS without even having to say the words. Mere implications were enough engage the conversation.

I'm very surprised that we're not talking about this.

I saw this segment and was disappointed. Bee was one of my favorites but this was terrible. I kept hoping she was being sarcastic but I don't think she was.

I think there were three pots she was trying to stir.

1) There's a division in the camp. Honestly, this is going to happen in every society. The best thing to do is acknowledge it and understand why those divides happen. In this case it is entirely because there's one group that likes to drum and dance and make noise. There's another group who doesn't. This is a non-issue. Everyone knows what's going on, and it's not going to cause even a second of escalation at all.

2) There's a shadowy council. It's a group of people who have been elected, by General Consensus, to run certain departments. So... It's Democracy. Sounds nuts.

3) They deliberate at a bank! You mean they go somewhere quiet where there's lots of space and they won't be disturbed while they talk about incredibly serious issues? Insane! So it just so happens to be in a Bank. If a Baskin Robbins was close by and large enough, they'd have gone in there too.

I tend to agree with Talkinboutarevolution on this one. Sam Bee's usually right on the money, but this one was just a little girl throwing stones at a wall.

The talk about the social stratification in the park was actually the most valid part of the piece.

The bit about 60 Wall St was so bogus OMG YOU'RE USING THE ATRIUM OF A BANK!?!??! that just wasn't funny.

I've seen the division myself - she is supposed to make fun of things that she observes and that's what she did. We should be asking ourselves how to unify people presently within the movement and increase outreach/support to the public.

Jon Stewart's older brother Larry Leibowitz is Chief Operating Officer of the NYSE.

Jonolith, don't be so offended by constructive criticism! After all, this movement is about change for the better.

  1. Yes, there is a division in the camp. Yes, this is going to happen in every society. However nobody is discussing why this is happening in every society. The look on those interviewees faces - acknowledgement, speechlessness - said a lot.

  2. Sounds great. Let's get the ball rolling even faster! Are there reelections for these positions? How often?

  3. There really wasn't any other place? Seriously? Think about that for a second.

I don't think she was either.

I understand that there's naturally going to be a ghetto, but why? And how does that look for publicity? Why isn't anyone addressing this issue?

I'm worried about the possibility of corruption in OWS.
