RANDI RHODES: On Today's Show - Thu, Apr 10, 2014
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a Civil Rights Summit is being held this week at the LBJ Presidential Library. All the living Presidents and many influential Democrats are there, Several high profile Republicans are also attending. They're taking a brief break from trying to dismantle civil rights. After the summit is over, all of the Republican politicians in attendance plan to go back to trying to restrict minority voting. Really, why would a Republican go to a Civil Rights Summit - unless it's to conduct opposition research?
According to one of the latest Pew Research polls, the majority of whites see racism as a thing of the past - which is odd because they're the ones who are perpetuating racism. Hello! Saying that racism no longer exists is evidence of racism. It's not clear if white people don't think we need more progress on racial equality because they think that everything is already equal, or if they just don't want things to be any more equal.
Meanwhile, House Democrats are making a legitimate comparison between Congressman Darrell Issa and legendary Senator Joe McCarthy. Congressman Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on Issa's Oversight Committee, says that there are "striking similarities" between Issa and McCarthy. I'm just surprised that Cummings was able to get that out without Issa shutting off his microphone - again. Issa is trying to have former IRS official Lois Lerner held in contempt for refusing to testify before his committee. He's mad at her for not talking, and he's mad at Elijah Cummings FOR talking. You just can't make Darrell Issa happy. Issa wants to have Lerner held in contempt because she refused to cooperate in his witch hunt on the phony IRS scandal. And those who don't cooperate in a witch hunt invariable get branded as witches.
Talk about McCarthy-esque - Bill O'Reilly is attacking Lois Lerner in ways that sound so much like McCarthy that they really should be on old 1950's black-and-white film stock. O'Reilly spewed that all he can say is that "…she's not a patriot. She's not doing the country any good." She's not a patriot! We should hold hearings to find out just who is a "patriot" and who isn't. Oh wait, that's exactly what Darrell Issa has already been doing. There is no difference between Bill O'Reilly's "not a patriot" and Joe McCarthy's "un-American!" They're both offensive - and they're both wrong.
