Forum Post: I Have Seen Order and Community At OWS Sites

Being one who travels all over the US, and who works to form opinions based on knowledge, I have taken time and visited five Occupy sites (Dallas, my home town Portland, DC NYC and Philadelphia). Here is what I have experienced.

  • A consistent presence of people who are articulate and educated about the issues that drive the movement.

  • Respectful, thoughtful dialogue (not always in agreement) about ending corruption and collusion in our government

  • Love for the ideals of our country (not always the practice) and hope that, in community, positive change can result

  • A lot of homeless or otherwise "marginal" citizens who would make a suburbanite uncomfortable

  • Disgust, frustration and anger that our wonderful country has been taken hostage by lobbyists and politicians

  • A surprising amount of order and organization.

So here's my point. Educate yourself before regurgitating what Fox News wants you to believe. Read, study, form your own opinions based on fact. It's your responsibility as a citizen.

I am joining the movement but worried about my health if I'm out in the cold a lot. I have chronic asthma but have no health insurance. Do the occupy areas have medical care and serve vegan meals?

From what I have read and seen, there is some basic support but I would not count on it

If only you suggesting that people do this would make it happen.

I've been to Zucotti Park and my experience is similar to yours.

All I know is what I have personally seen and experienced. You can think what you like.... dude

it's everywhere, everyone can see it. just letting YOU and your buddies know it's to late to save face now.

Again, what's YOUR experience. Not what someone has told you, especially the mainstream news. Your own personal experience.

This is hardly in the news anymore. I don't watch Fox. I read. At first I thought it was kind of cool. Then I read about Kalle Lasn the puppeteer and saw images of workers being harassed by OWS, destruction by OWS, chaos by OWS and realized what stupid tactics were being used. A movement that could have been. The police stuff was upsetting, but ultimately, seeing some really silly young people who've just come from their Poli-sci classes, I began to dislike the actors.

OK- fair enough. You have an opinion based on some sort of effort and I can respect that. Frankly, if I find that violence and anarchy start to characterize the movement, I'm gone. That' s just not my experience so far. What I have learned from the people I have spoken to is that the instances you mention are exceptions, not the rule, and not sanctioned (to the extent that they sanction any position) by the whole.

I posted somewhere else that without any focus, OWS is becoming an umbrella under which anyone can attack anything/idea/group they decide they don't agree with, and it is being done in the name of OWS. That is the problem and will cause this to spin out of control if it continues in this way.

[-] 1 points by wouldstronglypreferjustice (35) from Portland, OR 13 years ago

Yes, I agree as well. I am encouraged, however, by the increasing specificity of some of the positions being taken.

I have to agree. OWS needs to take it to the next level, which means some sort of organization, or the bad elements are going to derail the whole thing.

your motivations are not what you present. trying to discredit me is a waste of your time and a tired tactic.

[-] 1 points by wouldstronglypreferjustice (35) from Portland, OR 13 years ago

I'm really not trying to discredit you. I may be able to respect your opinion if you would simply answer my question. I started this post by sharing my own personal experience based on my own personal efforts in visiting five OWS sites over that last month. You told me I was wrong, which I don't see how that is possible since I am relating my own experience, and asked you to share your own. You have not shared any opinion based on what I asked.

That alone probably tells you what you need to know. He 'had a guy at one of them yesterday.' First-hand knowledge trumps second-hand knowledge any day.

You had a guy... that must have hurt.

[-] 0 points by ThatOneGuy (51) 13 years ago

yeah, but your mom got me some pain killers on the way to her place, so it's cool.
