Forum Post: I don't believe it is necessary to continue occupying Zucotti park.

With stolen generators, and a winter storm on the way, I don't believe there is much to be gained by staying in Zucotti. The message has been given loud and clear to Wall Street! The victory was won standing down the enforcers of corrupt authority. Time to regroup, stratagize and focus on the General Assembly. Just thoughts.

OWS is an amazing sucess story. The occupiers and their supporters are heros. No matter what happens now, those at Zuccotti Park started a world wide protest. They have every right to be proud. And every right to continue to occupy.

[-] 2 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

Yes, there is every right to continue to occupy, but Zucotti occupied or not OWS has started a global movement! That IS success by ant standard!

[-] 3 points by MakeLuvNotBillions (113) 13 years ago

Continue to occupy.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

I people have the stamina, and it won't just sap the movement, than continue to occupy.

This is true, and they will finally be able ratchet up their discrediting & disinformation campaign.

They will call it, just a fad. And, they will claim victory. Remember they can buy their own politics, we have a voice only when we fight hard to be heard.

We're winning. And we're being heard now. It's not time to fold the tent. Not yet.

[-] 1 points by monjon22 (508) 13 years ago

There will be those who claim this; however, there isn't a politician in this country today who has not reponded (although we many not be able to see it yet) to the OWS protests. To have thousands of Americans all over the United States screaming that they want democracy is the MOST embarrassing thing that has happened to our leaders in decades. They have egg all over their faces. The entire world is watching. Will the United States step up to the plate and practice what it preaches? Stay tuned.

[-] 1 points by Tyler (3) 13 years ago

Politicians will only continue to pay attention if the movement continues... Otherwise... out of site, out of mind

[-] 1 points by Tiberio (4) 13 years ago

don't be so sure. they're still pushed by the bureaucratic forces and lobbyists

[-] 1 points by socceronly (102) 13 years ago

Add more people, as many as possible. Don't give up. If they make it through the winter, there will truly be an American spring.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

The enthusiasm people are showing on the ground for staying is just amazing! I'm truely astonished! That is the kind of commitment we need. I feel that people are really changing my mind about this. My hat is just off to everyone here!

[-] 1 points by MaxRommel (57) from Ridgefield Park, NJ 13 years ago

We are being ridiculed. They are calling it zuccini park.

[-] 1 points by entrepreneur (69) 13 years ago

i checked weather its bad only tonight..its going to be sunny again as the storm passes.. kudos to those who staying put inspite of weather... its okay if some cannot stand the weather, and for your health reasons.. keep it going....

[-] 1 points by Tiberio (4) 13 years ago

I understand what you're saying. And more should be done. But we're not there yet. Let's continue to occupy and work towards what you're saying. E-mail me tiberio.saraceno@gmail.com if you want to talk more personally about it.

[-] 1 points by PandaMe73 (303) from Oakland, CA 13 years ago

I say stay as long as you can, but even with generators, at some point you guys will probably get frozen out. The weather is not the same as it used to be, and this year will see a repeat of the blizzards from last winter.

Yeah the folks actively interested in opposing OWS will claim we lost, but so what? I would enjoy nothing more than seeing them gloat about how we lost for a couple of months only to watch with horror as we hit the streets with double strength in the spring.

I don't think a lot of people understand how big this is becoming, it's hard for most folks to count on a logarithmic scale. I also don't think a lot of them understand the back ways of the web, they come to this website and the GA website, make a head count, and think they have a handle on it, but none of the folks most interested in stopping this movement have any concept of how deep the rabbit hole goes. If they did, they'd shut the internet off tomorrow :)

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

Yeah, it's not just about Zucotti park anymore, but if there are people who really want to stay, I say more power to them!

[-] 1 points by pissedoffconstructionworker (602) 13 years ago

We're going to stay for Valley Forge Winter 2012 AND come back double strength in the spring.

[-] 1 points by PandaMe73 (303) from Oakland, CA 13 years ago

Even better :)

First off, greetings from Australia. Just letting you know that your message is being heard world-wide and I would like to congratulate you all on the job well done so far. However, the movement is far from over if you wish it to be successful which is why in my opinion it’s important to continue to occupy. Now I understand that NY winters are ruthless and I know that it’s easy to shoot my opinion off when I’m so far away in a safe environment however, disassembling from Zucotti Park will only lose the movements momentum. If you guys disassemble now, the “1%” will view this as a victory and this will affect any future plans of assembly as your movement will be portrayed by the general public as ‘just another protest’. The movement’s momentum has already achieved world-wide attention and inspired others to establish their own occupancies.

In my humble opinion, for now I would concentrate on recovering the generators and any other facilities required for the winter to come. Once that is established you may then continue on your path to change, which I believe is possible. Your government’s efforts to stop the movement are only strengthening it as witnessed with the police brutality being carried out on you guys. Scott Olsen’s story has been posted all over the internet and even being covered by the mainstream media from my understanding, which is why I feel your government is strategically trying to take a different approach on the matter, hence the confiscation of the generators, kerosene etc; targeting the peoples morale and will to continue fighting. I believe if you guys can figure out a way to make it through the winter then success is not only tangible but close. All the best with whatever you decide on guys… no matter what happens you should all be proud of what you’ve accomplished so far and I will continue to monitor your cause with encouragement. Peace and support from your friend down-under.

This is a well thought out point, and makes me question my own reasoning on this point. Thanks Austrailia.

Its coming into the summer months down under. The NYC winters can kill folks if outside, especially down town with the wind chill. Life and limb is at stake.

[-] 1 points by yosteve (64) from Newbury, OH 13 years ago

Is there a plan for daily protests should people be forced to "unoccupy"?

I'm guessing some occupiers are truly homeless at this point. Is there a count of people who became homeless in order to occupy (no longer have a place to go should they be forced to leave)

[-] 1 points by JJB13 (8) 13 years ago

Why not protest but not occupy? I see many of you saying "the victory was won"....."we started a worldwide movement". How is that a victory? It is a HUGE defeat to occupy then leave with no demands met. It basically gives everyone the message that protesters are merely a bunch of kids with short attention spans. You didn't even make one demand or have it met. Even a ransom note does that. The protest should continue. I saw no point in the occupation to begin with as I think it hurt the cause. But the protest should not end.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

The protest must not ever end. It is a state of being to refuse to cooperate with evil

[-] 1 points by entarage (36) from New York, NY 13 years ago

I spoke to reporter Lou Young, from CBS Channel 2 news this evening who told me that there are 20 bike generators on their way from Boston to Z park tonight at midnight. Not sure if they got there or not. Please post if you learn any updates! Thanks!

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

You got it.

[-] 1 points by DocWatson (109) 13 years ago

The good aspect of the cold is that it ought to numb out the cops a good bit too.

They'll be sitting in their cars or shuffling their feet if on foot patrol just trying to stay warm.

[-] 1 points by BonaFidePublius (93) 13 years ago

Occupy Washington.. hardcore? But why stop whats working? 10% in US already support the movement after a month.. just imagine how much that will shoot up once Republicans realize this isn't a Democratic Party movement..

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

That's for everyone to decide, but I feel we need now to work on building the network. It's possible to produce big events only if energy can be sustained. We also need to build support.

[-] 1 points by BonaFidePublius (93) 13 years ago

Thats why people need to preach the actual message, and to get rid of the Marxist or any other kind of stupid small politcal changes.. The first thing is to get the system back into the American peoples hands. After that, then people can discuss a better solution.

So, dont be scared to use social media or even bring OWS up in discussion. People wont think your crazy if they actually know what the movement is about, because its a movement FOR THE PEOPLE.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

Absolutely

[-] 1 points by Student (94) 13 years ago

Continue to Occupy!

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

That's your decision. I respect that point of view.

[-] 1 points by Student (94) 13 years ago

I respect yours too :)

[-] 1 points by Dost (315) 13 years ago

If people want to stay at the Park, that is their decision. However, it is important to take the Movement to the next level and that means organization. It means organizing a nationwide network of chapters to promote mass protests at a moment's notice. In a lot of communities, it is hard to make the commitment of a sustained occupy movement. Already, authorities are moving in and shutting down some of them. I think it very credible that most will be gone by Thanksgiving with a few exceptions. This does not mean the movement ends but begins a second phase of meetings, building membership. and weekly or monthly planned protests, with major protests planned in L.A., San Fran, New York, Washington, etc. with a long range plan to occupy Washington DC with civil disobedience.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

Yes, this phaze has succeded beyond all expectation!

[-] 1 points by Dost (315) 13 years ago

At some point, you will probably be booted out. They are waiting for the opportunity to do so. Looking for excuses. The undercovers amongst you are checking you out and plotting. I have seen this before at the 1972 Republican Convention. Watch for those in their later twenties to early forties, either sex nowadays which makes it harder to discover. They are pretty straight. Check out their shoes. You got to use your intuition on this. Some of these people are real bastards. Back in 1960s, they infiltrated a group of my friends and really fucked people up. Be aware of what you say and to whom. They are no doubt preparing a bust but timing is everything. They are looking for an opening. No need to be paranoid about it. When it happens, they will come out in force. Their aim: intimidation. Fortunately, you all got cameras. So they have to take this into account. Stay calm, take good photos and video and have witnesses. Do not over-react. Some of the scum suckers are posting here, or at the very least monitoring. Remember the boy-scout motto: be prepared. Forewarned means being forearmed (metaphorically speaking).

Lots of hand warmers and electric blankets

Unless someone has a zero point energy device handy.

[-] 1 points by sudoname (1001) from Berkeley, CA 13 years ago

I formally invite* everyone to come down to oakland. It's warm all winter :-)

  • I have no authority to do so
[-] 1 points by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL 13 years ago

Might be a good idea to start purchasing those bike generators.

[-] 1 points by Keeku (31) 13 years ago

I saw those bike generators and thought of the movie "Soilent Green" that's set in the future.

/shiver

[-] 1 points by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL 13 years ago

I remember seeing them advertised about 30 years ago. The idea was to get couch potatoes to loose wight by forcing them to peddle to watch TV.

[-] 1 points by Keeku (31) 13 years ago

I love the idea.. maybe one like a treadmill would be good too. They could double as dog-walkers.lol Did you ever see "Soilent Green"? Very frightening movie. All the 99ers should see it as well "THX 1138" and read Orwells 1984.

[-] 1 points by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL 13 years ago

I had some of that soilent stuff the other day. Very tasty. I'm thinking of giving it to the kids for Holloween.

[-] -1 points by roloff (244) 13 years ago

It's going to get cold and I want to go home, someday we will look back at this movement with pride and say the news covered us then, we stood for nothing, accomplished nothing, but we sure as hell protested when the weather was good

[-] 2 points by demonstrator (167) 13 years ago

you stood for everything- accomplished a great deal- you were wonderful. you will be remembered in the history books - bringing freedom a a once enslaved peoples

[-] -1 points by roloff (244) 13 years ago

Wow I must be Abraham Lincoln or Moses

[-] 1 points by demonstrator (167) 13 years ago

no -- you aren't even a part of this movement- and are attempting to stop it. this movement can't be stopped.

[-] 0 points by roloff (244) 13 years ago

No I'm just bored, to be honest I really want the movement to continue, watching the most fortunate people who ever existed on this planet protest against how society is unfair is so funny sometimes I am shocked its real

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

Ignore the trolls. Think on your feet.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

Perhaps that would be the impression of many, if everyone just went home and went back to sleep.

[-] 0 points by TIOUAISE (2526) 13 years ago

TROLL

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

Not a troll. I have lived in severe winter weather. It is serious, and must be taken into consideration. If everyone can really deal with it, fine, stay. If not plan round two. Just throwing this out there.

Sometimes it's better to bend than possibly break.. People must make a realistic assessment. If conditions become intollerable, and people are forced to leave later, it will generate a hail of press derision, even if it's 42 below outside

[-] 1 points by monjon22 (508) 13 years ago

I understand what you are saying; however, many may not yet be ready to move to the next phase or further south for the winter. I understand that too. Tomorrow night will be very cold and rainy. Most likely some will leave. That will be when those that remain will need to decide (or not) what their course will be.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

Fine, just realize that leaving the park, if necessary, DOES NOT make the movement a failure. On the contrary, it has been the most successful movenment in modern history and is only about a month old.

[-] 1 points by monjon22 (508) 13 years ago

I agree totally. It is amazing. I am so proud of the protesters. I go to Zuccotti Park as often as I can to support them and myself as a member of the 99%.

[-] 0 points by TIOUAISE (2526) 13 years ago

I wasn't calling you a troll, I was calling "roloff" a troll, for his extremely cynical comment : "It's going to get cold and I want to go home, someday we will look back at this movement with pride and say the news covered us then, we stood for nothing, accomplished nothing, but we sure as hell protested when the weather was good"

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

Thank you for that, Tiouaise. I have read many of your comments and I really care what you think.

[-] 0 points by TIOUAISE (2526) 13 years ago

Thanks, GypsyKing. that's very motivating. :)
