In the 1950s and 1960s, American Citizens seeking to invoke their First Amendment rights to protest against Civil Rights abuses were attacked by well-trained and well-armed police using fire hoses, night sticks and snarling, vicious attack dogs.
In 2011, American Citizens seeking to invoke their First Amendment rights to protest against the perceived abuses of Wall Street and the privileged few have been attacked by well-trained and heavily-armed police using pepper spray and night sticks, beating and spraying innocent, peaceful protesters seemingly without provocation.
It appears that almost everyone who watches these “Atrocities” against First Amendment Rights on television or who reads about them in newspapers and magazines or who hears about them on radio and other media are appalled and aghast at what is happening between the citizens and the police in these instances.
Let me restate some of that! I guess there are a lot of people representing the interests of The Far Right Wing Radicalized Religious Extreme who see the OWS Protesters as little more than excess human baggage and have termed them “Commies, Hippies, Nazis, Filthy Scum” and the like. I have no evidence that this kind of mindlessness even has the capacity to be appalled at such mistreatment. In fact, I sometimes get the impression that this kind even may encourage such outrages.
But, apparently, the viciousness of the attacks against Americans who are doing nothing more than peaceful assembly and protest are going on and will continue to go on because, as I see it, there has been no creditable or helpful response from The Federal Government to protect these unfortunate souls from the military might and power of a far superior armed force.
It is both surprising and disappointing to me that the President of the United Sates in 2011 has not taken a lesson from the Presidents of the 1950s and 60s in regard to protecting the First Amendment Rights of Citizens in these “Occupy Wall Street” types of protest.
When the violence against peaceful American Citizens was perpetrated by the moneyed elite and power brokers in the 1950s and 60s, their arrogance was answered with contingents of Federal National Guard Troops being dispatched, bayonets at the ready, to insure Americans were protected from the violence being done against them.
My question is, where are the Troops now?
Why hasn’t the current President seen fit to protect the innocents from physical abuse and injury by the Big, The Blue and the Brave wielding their weapons of violence against peaceful protests in the streets, the parks and on the campuses of this great nation? Is it going to take the spilling of someones life blood to get the attention of the Federal Government on this one? I thought it was the job of the Fed to protect our citizens from just such outrages against Freedom as these have been.
