Forum Post: How to beat Wall Street: START A BANK.

Here's an idea. OWS should start a cooperative bank, focused on community ideals. Without depositors, the "big" banks will have nothing. In fact, a very small shift to the current banks' deposit base would reduce their influence significantly as they are HIGHLY leveraged. It's our money that helps fund Wall Street, why not have our money fund equality?

It's funny. I've known some hippies in my day and some of them turned into lawyers, bankers and other people you don't seem to care for much. Others didn't amount to anything but the point is some have done quite well for themselves.

I've been using the same bank for almost 50 years so I have no reason to change now. Never did.

So you would believe the business changes who you are? So basically all banks are filled with people you don't seem to care for. I'm surprised you are using a bank at all.

I'm sure you all could organize and run a business...

Then they will become the 1% that they hate so much. They'll have to occupy themselves!

[-] 1 points by Economics201 (10) 13 years ago

Then they become the 99%, and occupy a better place.

I'm going to smash your bank windows and take a dump inside of it. You retards couldn't start a lemonade stand let alone a bank.

Yea!....But how will we pay the expenses associated with running a bank?

[-] 1 points by Economics201 (10) 13 years ago

Intrest from loans, just like every other bank. It is a license to print money sadly.

But I thought we were against that? <confused>

We are not against the traditional funcition of a bank. Sooner or later you will need some sort of place where you can hold your "goods" so that them can be lend to somebody or so that you can lend to yourself when you are older. Even because its suport that should give, it not so crazy to think on having 1 national bank, at the end the money is made by FED, or goverment. So that real bussniss, production of food, goods, energy , are the real thing to be thinkin about... we should see rich people owners of farms, owners of car production, .... no rich beacuase been a a banker....

Now you're talking.... All good points.

Are you an American? I can't understand your paragraph or whatever it is...

[-] 1 points by Argentina (178) from Puerto Madryn, Chubut 13 years ago

No im not, sorry of my bad english.

I just whant to explain, that BANKS itselfs are not bad, and are necesary, but they shuold be just a "borucracy" need, just a like a dentist, or a car repair shop , a extra service of real production. Is nonsense that "rich" are companys that doenst makes any real thing.... Its no way that banks can make paper work to catch more money for themselfes just doing derivates insurences, and all that avaibles things.... and if they are admited, and then fail,... just let the banks bankrupt, and fall down.

Against institutions that take that power and influence and repress workers, export jobs, and destroy our social support systems.

[-] -1 points by happybanker (766) 13 years ago

It seems like those repressed workers would leave those companies and find other work on their own. Also, alot of other countries are very poor. Isn't it good for the world to have US companies provide jobs to some of those areas? Just trying to understand.

And who will run it? And how will you operate it without the government shutting it down? FYI what you are proposing is basically what a credit union is.

[-] 1 points by Economics201 (10) 13 years ago

Credit union wouldn't have the same agenda. This is about defunding the current establishment, and funding a bank that shares our ideals. And it doesnt cost us (99%) a dime. Unified with strength, for the price of deposits.

[-] 0 points by Jimboiam (812) 13 years ago

What agenda is that?

[-] 1 points by Economics201 (10) 13 years ago

Equality, social justice, fair wages, healthcare, affordable education, etc...

[-] -1 points by happybanker (766) 13 years ago

How would we set the price of fair wages? Who would set it?

[-] -1 points by happybanker (766) 13 years ago

It's amazing that all of the good "Ideas" of the movement have already been thought of....that's unfair!
