one logical extreme would be to let everyone copyright everything forever - you pay for everything that you do that wasn't originally your idea - read using the english alphabet, type on a keyboard, sing a birthday song, etc.

the other logical extreme would be to ignore all copyrights - download free music, use free software, buy medicine at the cost of producing excluding research investment, read free books, manufacture all kinds of iphone and PC knockoffs, etc.

one system is extremely tough going for the consumer, the other is extremely tough going for the inventor.

so a meaningful system lies somewhere in between
