What are you talking about? You can't mine data with HTML, it's a markup language, not a programming language. You do data mining with server side languages, and these have existed long before HTML even existed. You could do data mining back in the telnet and gopher days.

It can also do all kinds of other stuff. HTML does not contain server-side code. I'm not sure where you got this strange idea. Just "view source" on any website to see the HTML. There is no server-side code there.
In any case, the point is data-mining was possible decades before HTML. It was possible the second we connected two computers together back near the middle of last century. HTML versions have nothing to do with data-mining capabilities.
Each version makes it easier.

I won't take this story too seriously unless I read it from a few more journalists. It seems implausible, and the journalist could easily be confused with clients who pay companies to create DDOS attacks to test their systems before going online. Could be true, who knows. But, I'll wait for more info before jumping the gun. As we all know, news is often wrong.
