Forum Post: Hegelian dialectic

Usually presented in a threefold manner, it was stated by Heinrich Moritz Chalybäus as comprising three dialectical stages of development: a thesis, giving rise to its reaction, an antithesis, which contradicts or negates the thesis, and the tension between the two being resolved by means of a synthesis.

I wonder what kind of synthesis will result from the OWS movement?

The flaw in the Hegelian dialectic is that the synthesis is not necessarily good or even logical. What's more is the fact that the elite use this idea to create false dichotomies like the two party system where both sides of an issue are defined by the same people, therefore they control the synthesis.

This. I'm not sure where this is all headed but it may be so contradictory as to be meaningless, or worse.

If anything, this movement has opened the opportunity and the dialogue to even ask that question. I think a synthesis will be reflected in how our government changes, how can we make it a better system for everyone.

I think it depends heavily on how our fellow citizens communicate with each other. To achieve any kind of lasting synthesis, open dialogue needs to be sustained. If the national discussion lasts long enough, rationality will surface eventually. Right now, I think people just need to talk and keep talking; and, keep standing up to the institutions and systems of power that have failed a large majority of Americans by embracing self serving practices and have only listened to a few voices instead of striving for a "synthesis" of many voices.

Basically, to reach any kind of synthesis will be an step forward from where we are now.

Nice to see someone presenting actual information. More people need to understand this.

I don't think we've left the thesis stage yet.

I know but I still wonder what effects the actions of so many will have on the future of this nation.

The progressive movement changed America in profound ways how will we make a difference if at all?

Good question.
