I live in Canada and although we still have our problems with poverty and housing affordability, our income tax rates increase with income, helping to distribute wealth and fund public services.
As a nurse and a HUMAN BEING, I cannot imagine the stress of having to pay for health care out of my own pocket. That is INSANE and completely UNREALISTIC for most people. Not to mention that if you cannot afford healthy food and are stressed out from working all the time, chances are you will get sick eventually.
It breaks my heart that just a few hours away, across an arbitary line, are millions of people who don't have the same health care that I do. Even those of us in Canada that are homeless or in debt can go to a walk-in clinic, an emergency department, or see our family doctor FOR FREE. If we need life-saving surgery or medication, have a baby or a chronic health condition, we are not handed a bill when we leave or denied care based on our income.
Perhaps the large bailout to corporate America would have been better invested in a national medicare program instead of ensuring execs got their bonus cheques and profits didn't fall.
At the end of the day, we are not here to collect material things and paper money that isn't worth the ink printed on it. When we die we can't take any of that with us. BE MORE, WANT LESS.

Hey, also, all the free care that you mention above is available here, too. It's called Medicaid. Learn before you spout.
Working 30 hours a week at minimum wage is too much to get medicaid, under full time so your job doesn't offer benefits, and nowhere near enough to afford healthcare. I cut myself two years ago, needed stitches, and I'm still paying the bill.
Hey, I've got a great idea....Why don't you worry about what is happening in Canada and let deal with what is happening in the US?
I'm portuguese, we do have an enormous chrisis upon us right now, but no one, NO ONE, can imagine our society with a Nacional Free Health System! Isn't one of the most basic of basic things?
Love your movement, please do not give up!!
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
You are suggesting slavery. Whether or not the medical personnel get paid is not the point, so long as someone gets free healthcare as it is a right. What if the medical field decides to strike and not treat anyone because they do not feel they are being compensated fairly? What if a doctor refuses to help someone?
Also as a nurse, I think forcing one human to pay for another human's healthcare is not right, and not a right. Look to Canada to see why we should not socialize medicine! What will happen to our awesome medical advances if the profit potential is removed? Sorry, but profit is driving these advances! That is why Canadians with money or power come to the US for healthcare.
Profit is ... to a point. It's not like every profitable dollar goes to advancing medicine; it actually winds up in a group of people's pocket.
Ah, so you're the type who'd allow senior citizens to die. You're such a great person.
Like I said before, there's a growing demand for churches lately.
I want free stuff now! Healthcare should be free! I want it. That is enough reason. Screw you. Go to work and serve me now. SERVE ME. And you should not be paid. I want your salary so I can have a fleet of jets like that fat bitch who owns ketchup.
Captain, you crack me up! If you end up with two Ferraris, I'll take one!
I'll amend my list of demands to include a Ferrari, just for you. I was thinking of asking for some rims on mine. Would you like rims on yours too?
The Captain is hilarious! Keep it going, Sir.
Is taxation correct? Of course it is. Should all human beings have access to health care? of course they should. Should one person have ten loaves of bread and the next nine have none? Of course not. Should one person have a personal fortune of $15 billion, when millions have nothing? Only a greedy sociopath would think so. It's called common humanity.
Yes! and the reverse is common insanity....which now prevails.
How can it be one person's right to force another person to provide medical treatment?
How can it be one person's right to force me to pay for a child's education in a public school and yet I have no children. Why should I pay for the education of my neighbor's children. This is your logic not mine. We all have different ideas as to how tax dollars should be spent. People deserve health care as much as a child deserves and education.
You missed the point. Dollars don't provide care. People do. If it's one persons right to care logically if follows that it's also their right physically force someone to perform the care services. Health care at minimum requires two people. So how do say it is an individual right. That makes no sense. One person's rights cannot justifiably infringe on the rights of another.
Where do the tax dollars come from? Are they just miracles out of thin air? What if I don't want to pay taxes? What happens to me? Wait for it...wait for it... could it be the initiation of force? I want my free stuff.
