Has any nation ever survived when it's economy was a totally unregulated "laissez-faire" economic system?

hong kong is closer to laissez faire than any other country in the world. but they also have some semblance of government intervention: taxes on land ownership (which hk is extremely short of), public spending, currency pegging, and possibly soon minimum wage. thanks to influence from the PRC government hongkong is also forced to open its borders to migration. guess which way people are going?

Government is too tempted to interfere because they know best. Thus they destroy the economy.

Probably everyone started like that (I mean in the very beginning), but didn't last long.
