in order to continue the building momentum, i believe that this fledgling movement needs to engage the "faith-based community."
Getting churches to offer their buildings and sanctuaries as "camp-out" places for the overnite protestors would be a good step to take.
I can't help but wondering how the camp-outs in the open could continue during the winter. The flexibility of being able to "occupy" churches, sanctuaries, and other donated rooms/spaces overnight i think would help the movement continue as the fall season changes into winter. is anyone of like mind in this subject? does anyone have a church that would open its doors to the 99 percent-ers??
What's most important is to make a visible presence during daytime hours and to get the media involved in covering the stories which evolve. I would hate for the movement to be interrupted because there are no protected meeting grounds for people to gather during the colder months ahead, and I would like to see religious communities become engaged in supporting the movement and continuing the dialogues of what is "Economic Justice" in today's troubled times.
a U-U who believes in Social Justice and social change
Quakers already have 24/7 to the protesters at Occupy Philly.
Yes, I deeply admire the Quakers. One of my best friends is a Quaker (though they call themselves "Friends" now).
I agree. We need to take back religion from the right. Religion isn't just a right wing thing. My father is an extremely devout Catholic yet he would be considered a liberal by most people today but he doesn't consider himself a liberal.
Unbelievable how the right leaders can just twist the Gospel into something opposite, and the right followers just eat it as if the Gospel is still in Latin & Greek.
wow, this is Genius...
yes we need to do this... maybe a "Faith Sunday" OccupyChurch!
Once we get God on board, the Conservatives will surely follow :)
Revolutions takes people, and the south there are a lot of people of Faith, but they also believe in our cause, let's embrace and take back our country!
This is a great idea.
Religion is a touchy subject for me and I can't relate to most Christains in America. I agree with the moral values that Christianity is supposed to preach, but many branches have taken the bible too literally. Just as a devout Christian can't understand how I can't believe in a higher power, I can't understand how someone would belive in one. Personally, I would like to concentrate on things everyone can agree with because there are to many faiths and ideologies for us to cater to. No disrespect to any faith, but we can't divide ourselves anymore than we already are.
Philosophy is everywhere in this movement - Non-violent philosophy, social change philosophy, revolution philosophy. To say that this is a movement "without religion" and "without philosophy" is to contradict the very essence of what is happening - a wave of humanity across the globe which has connected to bring about social change. I am not part of a "fundamental" type religion - but am a Humanist who believes change is needed.
If religious institutions want to volunteer their buildings for places to stay without wanting something in return that is great. However I don't feel religion should be brought into a movement based on business and government
