"Assuming, then, that Occupy Wall Street did put out a call for a general strike - and it remains to be seen what the protesters would specifically hope to achieve through such action - how would the public react? The problem is that we are essentially in uncharted waters here. As a general rule, labour has shied away from using the radical weapon of a general strike, and the most historic instance in which such tactics were employed - in Seattle in 1919 - had ambiguous results."
[...]
"Needless to say, of course, 1919 was a vastly different era from today and labour was much more radical and willing to engage in provocative tactics. Nevertheless, Locker is upbeat. A general strike in New York, he says, 'could spark a nationwide strike and bring the movement to a whole new level'."

Lets get money out of politics, keep the Koch Brothers out and put the 99% back in control where it belongs:

Koch brothers should be tried and convicted for their abuses of business, and their pollution of the environment, and their corruption of Politics!
General Strike! That'd be The Occupy Event. General strike until it is all settled.
Anything else, and they gonna throw us a bone, and then it will be impossible to get the momentum again.
Actually I had Proposed for General Strike, And I say everybody except for emergency workers (Firemen, Paramedics, Cops) should go on a strike or rolling strikes or even work to rule. If Anti protestors want to establish rule of law then also have work to rule. I would even suggest that private sector employees join especially bank employees who do not earn millions but get by on minimum wage.

“The Railway Labor Act bans strikes by United States airline and railroad employees except in narrowly defined circumstances. The National Labor Relations Act generally permits strikes, but provides a mechanism to enjoin strikes in industries in which a strike would create a national emergency. The federal government most recently invoked these statutory provisions to obtain an injunction requiring the International Longshore and Warehouse Union return to work in 2002 after having been locked out by the employer group, the Pacific Maritime Association.”

Strike to get back the money the lords of finance have stolen. We need it to live.

Look to the striking teachers in Tacoma, WA--they've struck despite statutory bans.
It's to early for anything like a general strike. The Occupy movements have not officially made any type of demands.
I know every one is eager to get the ball rolling but you need to realize something. The Occupy protests have been around for less then 30 day's. People can't expect us to have all the answers yet.
Do you think that a demand such as "end austerity" is too broad?
What would we be striking for, specifically?
To get our voices heard and not go back to work until each and every politician, Senator, Member of Congress (both State and Federal) come out and explicitly tell American people where they stand on this issue. no lengthy statements only acceptable answers are "Yes, we are with you" or "No". And we will not end strikes till they pass laws to convict fraudsters bankers and will not end till we get guarantees that jobs outsourced will be brought back, and wealthy pay their fair share of taxes.
we can figure that out when we're striking ;)
Na, doesn't work that way. A boycott needs focus and a definable goal. Its a weapon and like all weapons you have to know where to aim it. Think it through a bit more.
I was kidding - I agree with you.
I think that is the question that needs to be answered.
