Universal health care at least until adulthood. Guaranteed best education available K-12. Non-discriminatory criminal justice. Money out of politics of course. Those are the basics of what I believe necessary to pursue happiness.

I took my daughter down to see Occupy Wall Street. Her history teacher had suggested it to see history in the making. She took pictures to show the the class and got a "I am the 99%" T-shirt. She wondered, though, why the concentration of wealth in the top 1 percent was necessarily a bad thing. Somebody has to be on top. My answer was that our current level of income disparity had become so excessive that it broke our country's norm and, according to "The Spirit Level" (published by two British researchers in 2009), we now have one of the most excessive income disparities in the world. What's bad is they proved a link in countries with this imbalance to lower life expectancy and trust in government and higher substance abuse, obesity, infant mortality, homicides and incarceration.
