Forum Post: Force A Constitutional Amendment?

There is great power in the movement for the moment. Power to the People. But so far, little has been accomplished besides raising awareness. (which is excellent!) I would like to see this power converted into action which can produce lasting change for the good.

The OWS movement is riding on the top of the news for the time. But as news cycles come and go, it will inevitably be scrolled into also-ran status. It would be a shame to see the movement whither without accomplishing lasting change.

I wonder if we can be the driving force behind at least one new Constitutional Amendment.

Some suggestions:

  1. Repeal Corporate Personhood.
  2. Establish that money is not free speech.
  3. Require stiff sentencing and proportional (to blue collar crime) funding for investigation of white collar crime.
  4. Require Instant Run-Off Voting (look it up on wiki) It allows each voter to select first choice, second choice, third choice, etc for each office. If one candidate wins a majority, the result stands, but if not, the one with the least votes is eliminated and those ballots who voted for that candidate as first choice then get their second choice counted in a recount. The process continues until one candidate gets a majority. This allows voters to indicate true choices and for the public to become aware of real views, not simply votes for the lessor of two evils.

Obviously we are not going to get the current Congress to approve our amendments so it would have to go to the States.

Do you honestly think your going to fix anything? These people in power do not care what anybody thinks anymore because they already got everything they wanted from us

FIRST, GET THE CONVENTION CALL . . .

THE KEY is to get every governor/legislature of the 50 sates to demand an ARTICLE V AMENDMENTS CONVENTION - Now, at this stage the details simply don't matter: Getting ALL 50 states onboard is critical. Once Congress is forced to call the convention, then delegates in each state present their amendment or amendments for discussion and adjustment, and an OK to go forward toward ratification and possible eventual high law that the Congress, President or Supreme Court can't change.

http://www.article-v-convention.com/ AND http://www.article-v-convention.com/files/28th-amendment.html

WHAT YOU CAN DO -- Write concise, friendly snail-mail letters to the governor and legislature of your state. When they receive 10,000 letters, 100,000 letters or 5,000,000 letters you will get their attention -- Guaranteed. Be Nice.

I agree, but the key thing is: one person, one vote, NO donations to any political anything by organizations, and max donation per person per election cycle $500. And in addition to white collar crime, if we catch congresspersons taking money from special interests, that's treason, and we HANG them. (aT HALFTIME AT THE SUPER BOWL WOULD BE NICE :)

The Article 5 convention sounds like the way to go. Corparations are hurting a lot of ppl and benefitting very few. How would we go about ratifying or even starting an article 5 convention?

come on people everyone in the occupy movements are for this. we all need to keep this thread at the top so everyone will read it. this is just one step in solving the problems in america. but this is the first step we all must take. we all agree as americans that washington id bought and paid for. hell even if people dont support the movement they will agree on this. it needs to change and be illegal for corporations to lobby for votes. im afraid the powers that b have infiltrated so far down that even on the state level they politicians are bought and paid for.

constitutional convention in each state is needed. the one thing we all agree on is washington is bought and paid for. this needs to change and should be illegal

I agree, CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES IS NEEDED, also the people should vote laws. this makes it more than a occasional unrest, it makes it a permanent solution. People should join in groups an acquire the initiative to get the reclaims of this to the highest authorities.

it is easier to exert influence on a state level. state governments don't have any money to fight us. establish state banks and take our money back!

These are good ideas. This country has done many unjust things not just now but in the past. People are arguing on the forum about how we are breaking laws, but anything not included in the law is breaking the law! So before the civil rights act, being black and doing various activities was breaking the law. Before the women suffrages amendment, women broke the law by voting. Making an amendment to the constitution will force all laws to come current with the constitution. We don't need to enforce new laws, we need to ratified and create an amendment that speaks to this movement.

Article 5 of the US constitution is the environment we need to use for amendment.

Congress is very afraid of an Article 5 because they can loose all of their control when 3/4 of the states ratify. Meaning . . . we need to organize in our states even better than was done on wall street. Much better. Some history.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convention_to_propose_amendments_to_the_United_States_Constitution "Congress acted preemptively to propose the amendments instead. At least four amendments (the Seventeenth, Twenty-First, Twenty-Second, and Twenty-Fifth Amendments) have been identified as being proposed by Congress at least partly in response to the threat of an Article V convention."

Our first right in our contract is Article V, the right to have congress convene delgates when 2/3 of the states have applied for an amendatory convention.

Article. V.

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.-------
