Pundits and talking heads are quick to let “anarchists” have their say on network broadcasts to express what the Occupy Wall Street Movement is all about. Inarticulate dreamers are also given air, all in an effort to make the protest look silly, flakey, and way to radical for establishment values. In contrast, the media has soft peddled the radical right and allowed the Tea Party to seem like a legitimate voice for practical change…Their “ten commandments” were never decried as regressive, out of touch or insensitive to the realities of American life. We have been dished up a broken government, a tyrannical redistribution of wealth, corporate mongering, environmental nightmares and endless war flushing billions into “nation building” anywhere but here. What is especially insulting from the right wing pundits is their blatant disdain for “the poor” and working people (often describing labor unions as left-wing tools with socialistic ambitions). But reality is not built on lies or despotic policies where most Americans understand that the corporations are too powerful and government should be for and by the people…not the corporations. If we want government to work democratically for we, the people, then we need to be responsible citizens who lay out a path of progressive changes that will fix what’s broke. Bombast and talk of “revolution” will not win broad support but will alienate many ordinary people who would otherwise side with the protestors.
