This content is user submitted and not an official statement
I propose a question
To the General Assembly:
What is the rallying cry
Of our movement?
We are the 99%!
I would like to take a moment
To reflect on this statement.
_
Our movement has been mocked
For lacking a clear message or defined demand.
We have been twisted by the media
Into a group speaking only for the Left.
But by definition this is False.
If we are to succeed as the 99%,
And not be crippled by a bipolar discourse-
We must include those from all along
The political, economic, and social spectrum.
_
In Truth our message is as clear,
As my dream last night:
I envisioned a world,
Where every voice could be heard!
I envisioned a world,
Where differences were respected!
I envisioned a world,
That sought to include the Other!
I envisioned a world,
That was United
With our brothers and sisters
In the States of America
And from around the World.
_
When we march after this assembly,
Let us not stomp our feet
Behind an empty slogan.
Instead we should disperse
And open our eyes, ears, and hearts
To the concerns of 1, 3, 5, perhaps even 10
Of our silent friends out on the street.
And propose that they join us here-
Where they can and will be heard!
_
In this way we will create
A discussion among the 99%
To learn about each other
And discover our initial Demand.
This Demand will not be made to our government
Or even to corporations,
But instead directly to the 1%.
Not as our enemies,
But as a part of the 100%
Who are awakening to our shared humanity.
_
We are seeking a common starting point for change
That will begin to shift our system and structure
To compassionately benefit each one of us
Along with our planet
For now and for generations to come!
Note: I wrote this after attending an Occupy Seattle march in the early stages of the movement with about 50 people. I left feeling saddened that so many people watched us marching and chanting down the street, yet none of them joined us.
I think Occupy has become so much more after over two months, yet the heart of the idea still does not seem to be getting through to the people- How would you describe the message behind this movement and the groundwork that it is trying to establish?
In a nutshell, either they start demonstrating that they are not incapable and corrupt, or we're going to take over using the power of the ballot box!!
Please read the 99% Declaration: https://sites.google.com/site/the99percentdeclaration/
and who would you vote for in the ballot box?
you are jumping the gun. That step comes after the NGA. Each congressional district GA (DGA) first has to elect their two delegates for the NGA.
I don't think we have the support for that yet- first I think this protest represents a change to engage our family, friends, and community with a call for honest critical thought about our society and our values. The protests are a physical manifestation of this type of critical experimentation and it is revealing our country's lack of freedoms and power of the people.
There is some support but it needs to build as rapidly as possible. It's important to try to get ready for the NGA in July because that gives the government some time to address or show signs that they take this seriously. Obviously they haven't really taken OWS too seriously so far. The process of running 99r's for congressional seats will take time. Americans haven't got time to sit on the fence. Are you really for change or are you going to remain complacent and take the wait and see approach? As George Carlin said we've been sitting around the kitchen table being f'ed by a system that threw us overboard 30 years ago. I think people are fed up. OWS is the wakeup call, the shot across the bow. What is to be lost by holding the NGA???
I think OWS should morph into OLB, Occupy Liberty Bell or OIH Occupy Independence Hall. Have small peaceful assemblies all winter long in every congressional district spreading the word about the National General Assembly starting July 4th in Philadelphia. Ask the people of Philadelphia to invite their fellow Americans into their homes for the NGA and coordinate this all winter too. Have occasional "occupations" throughout the winter, growing in size as the spring approaches, the WE ARE THE 99% growing louder with each event. This keeps the light shining and the movement looks smart, smells like a rose. Imagine the city of Philadelphia's population doubling or tripling for four days in July 2012. Some ideas are just plain better than others.
Either people believe in you or they don't. Most of them don't.
My question is do people really even believe in themselves anymore? We don't need to be scared of asking this question. All it takes it to stop reacting and take the first action of calling into question your beliefs, based on our current reality, through an honest self-examination and revaluation.
