On January 11, 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his annual State of the Union Address to the Nation as a Fireside Chat from the White House.

“In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all regardless of station, race, or creed.

Among these are:

The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the Nation;

The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;

The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;

The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;

The right of every family to a decent home;

The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;

The right to a good education.

All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.

America’s own rightful place in the world depends in large part upon how fully these and similar rights have been carried into practice for our citizens. For unless there is security here at home there cannot be lasting peace in the world.”

The Political System has been corrupted to the point where all paths to address the exploitation of our people within it by the privileged are blocked, and we may soon find ourselves with a standard of living similar to what the people of Mexico are experiencing if we don't take a different tact.

Contributions to Obama might get you a nice t-shirt, but "change you can believe in" not so much, and I hate to even think about our future under any of the Republicans running. We need to do our pissing from outside the tent this time, so we won't end up all wet.

FDR was probably not perfect, most likely made his share of mistakes, but I think he was a man of character and principle - not some PHONY like Obama hiding behind a completely false persona.

I didn't know this. So I just looked it up to be sure. It's true. And damn relevant. FDR may have been one of the good guys. A rare exception to the rule. Good post. Damn good.

Definitely a man of principle, even though he was clearly off his rocker with most of these ideas. They are not even possible. The various rights are in conflict with each other on a monetary basis.

Can you imagine a court case on the definition of 'decent'? Well your honor my opinion of decent would be 10 acres of land 10,000 feet of home with a pool and I have to have a view of the ocean. Thats my minimum threshold for decent. See how ridiculous it is?
