I don't like Facebook. In my opinion, it uses bad policies to promote its growth. Having the default behavior of many controversial algorithms (such as facial recognition) be opt-out instead of opt-in concerns me. It feels like an invasion of my privacy. And I can't prevent it. Other people can fill out information about me without me even knowing or being able to control it.
But there's an even bigger problem. Facebook is an excellent social networking tool that is great for OWS.
I'm not sure how I feel about that, or what could be done about it. I know many people don't have the same opinion about Facebook that I do, but I can't keep quiet about my concerns and feel like an honest member of this movement.
What do you think?
I wont sign up for facebook, and everything they have done has made me glad for that choice.
I don't like Facebook either and I rarely use it anymore. I still have an account because I learned you can't delete it, only deactivate it. I think using FB for activism is particularly risky.
I think it would be an incredible show of strength for Occupiers to get off facebook and say with our actions that we will no longer support businesses that don't show respect for their customers. If we don't, internet invasion of privacy will get worse and worse.
I recently came across this social networking site:
http://onlymeworld.com/
It has no data mining, no web tracking, no facial recognition.
I checked onlymeworld and they wanted my geographical location for some reason. I attempted to tell them that I didn't like having to give them that information and had to give them my name and e-mail (it's bad enough how close they can get with my IP alone).
I lied of course, but I told them my problems with their service.
create your own social network.
everyone's trying to make the next facebook killer.
if you're successful, you can be very, very rich
Yea that would probably work. Know anyone with a good plan for how to do it?
I'm kinda busy right now on a different project.
Facebook is only a way for the government to track what you do and say. Whoever uses it subjects themselves to giving up any privacy they desire.
