Forum Post: Enlightening Forbes Article on Campaign Financing

Forbes article based on WSJ investigation. Unfortunately, the WSJ article is behind their pay for view wall.

Excerpt:

Until this week, though, $3.3 billion dollars of political spending from 2005 to 2011 was hidden, jammed down deep beneath the sofa cushions of public life. A blockbuster Wall Street Journal report revealed that Big Labor has been filing most of its disclosures with its friends at the Department of Labor (which, due to its mission to produce jobicidal regulations, is about as accurately named as a funeral home called a Department of Life). Unions’ disclosures to the Federal Election Commission, where you would ordinarily seek information about spending on elections, comprise only one-fourth of their total spending on politics.

Very diisappointed in the DNC crowd. No justification for unions spending billions (quietly til WSJ brought to light the FULL amount) on Dems? No acknowledgement that Citizens United protects unions, too? No acknowledgement that both parties are fed by the 1%? Oh yeah, think I saw a DNC thread denouncing 'both parties are the same" is a myth.

I just pray this forum has become a refuge for seriously partisan folks and not a true reflection of the thoughts of the OWS folks in the street.

OWS denoinces politics, but unless you are gonna get your 2nd ammendment tools out, politics is all we got. WE need a 3rd party. Not more Democrat shit. Do you REALLY think the Kennedy's care about the less fortunate?

Don't suppose that has anything to do with Obamacare waivers, do you?

For a special interest group that pushed so hard to enact legislation that weighs on the rest of America, unions seem to be the largest group that want to avoid the very law they helped enact. In fact, according to Friday afternoon’s document dump, the vast majority of individuals receiving special treatment in this latest waiver boondoggle are union workers. This brings the total of unionized ObamaCare waiver recipients to over 50% of the total recipients.

Are you ready
......................TO JOIN 80% OF YOUR FELLOW AMERICANS ?

We must not
DEMAND that we WANT THEM.to give to US
We must
DEMAND GOALS THAT WE WILL ACHIEVE FOR OURSELVES

Because of the Supreme Court's decision,
we cannot accomplish anything significant, without FIRST -

Overturning Citizens United !!!
Ending Corporate Personhood !!!

80% of Americans already agree on it
as stated in the ABC/Washington Post poll

In the the PFAW Poll -

85% of voters say that corporations have too much influence over the political system today.
77% think Congress should support an amendment to limit the amount corporations can spend on elections.
74% say that they would be more likely to vote for a candidate for Congress who pledged to support a Constitutional Amendment limiting corporate spending in elections.

COMMENTS ON THE ABOVE ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED

IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO ACT ----> JOIN US TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Our primary goal should be to elect representatives who support a constitutional amendment to counter Supreme Court decision Citizens United (2010) , that enables unlimited amounts of anonymous money to flood into our political system.
We don’t have to explain or persuade people to accept our position – we only have to persuade them to ACT based on their own position. Pursuing this goal will prove to the world that we, at OWS, are a serious realistic Movement, with serious realistic goals. Achieving this goal will make virtually every other goal – jobs, taxes, infrastructure, Medicare – much easier to achieve –
by disarming our greatest enemy – GREED.

IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO ACT ----> JOIN US TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

I feel that using the tactics of the NRA, the AARP, the TP, the anti-SOPA – who all represent a minority – who have successfully used their voting power and political pressure to achieve their minority goals - is a straight path for us to success that cannot fail to enable us to create and complete one task that the MAJORITY want.

Eliminating corporate personhoold would include labor unions. You do realize this!?

I actually agree that citizens united needs to go. I am able to ignore tv ads, but i know a lot of folks can'tl. Way I see it, it just helps the economy along since people get paid to make these ads. Could say it's a HUGE income redistrution plan. RIch donors > working class ad makers!

80% of Americans already want to get rid of CU.

80% of Americans already want to get rid of CU

That doesn't answer the question I posed regarding corporate personhood and labor unions.

[-] 1 points by bensdad (8977) 12 years ago

Almost everyone on the amendment "team" expects unions & corps to be treated identically. I agree One of the dozen proposed amendments ( SJR33 ) does not.

[-] 1 points by throaway (57) 12 years ago

OK! Guess I was confused since all I ever hear about in connection with money in politics is wall street and corporations.

[-] 1 points by bensdad (8977) 12 years ago

I would like to blame the evil right wing for the "Lie"
but its reall the simplicity of "corporations are not people" that is so easy to use all of the amendments [except SJR33} say constitutional rights are exclusivly for humans.
since corporate personhood rights do NOT exist in any law, legislation, through the normal process can grant any additional rights the the PEOPLE want to give. If you go to our no-signup website, you can read every bill & our analysis of all of them http://corporationsarenotpeople.webuda.com
