Opinion by John Liming

By now, everyone should be familiar with that old sweet refrain from Republicans, “We need smaller government! We need government to stay out of the lives of individuals!”

Now a couple of Republican State Representatives in Ohio have reportedly decided it is time to introduce a new state law that would require drug tests for all recipients of welfare.

That would certainly go a long way in keeping government out of the lives of individuals now wouldn’t it? Ha!Ha!Ha!Ha!

The much-touted Republican “Smaller Government” ideal would undoubtedly (In my view) be offset somewhat by the need to create an entirely new and, most likely highly expensive bureaucracy to administer such tests. (When Republicans decide to spend Taxpayer Money, they have never been known to be pikers as far as I can tell.)

I get the idea they would love to jump on such an eventuality as some kind of victory in “Jobs Creation.” (The newly created bureaucracy would need bodies to run it, right? More “Jobs,” right?)

Along comes State Representative Robert F. Hagan (D-Youngstown) with his counter proposal to improve accountability in state public officials, legislators, Jobs Ohio board members and recipients of Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) bailout funds.

And how does he intend to accomplish this worthy goal?

Why, by requiring that drug testing be applied to these folks in high governmental perches as well. (Ingenious!)

What the point lets test drugs all on welfare and social security too while at it. Its slippery slope become the watchtower state doing that. Don't think this is good idea want to limit welfare benefits because got worse drugs than pot that will never be detected with a drug test easily like Cocaine, Meth, Escasty

Lets also have drug testing for Unemployment and Entitlements. If we are going to force drug testing lets do it for all government expenditures.
