I wrote this as a response to a post where people who had supported us in the past are frustrated and confused because of the emergency post for winter supplies when they feel that we should be "more responsible":
i just wanted to say that i was working w/ Comfort last night, before the storm, helping to move dozens and dozens of large trash bags filled with wet blankets and winter clothes to a spot where it was put into a U-Haul and brought to an OWS-friendly laundromat by a team of people. the night before was stormy and many of our supplies got wet and muddy. shit happens, and yet there were boxes and boxes of tents and new sleeping bags still being distributed during this process. we are doing our best. it is hard work. please don't give up on us because we are "not prepared". if you were at the park, you would see that many, many good people are working tirelessly to keep this movement going. Also, to replace the generators, MIT reportedly were sending down stationary bikes that generate power, last night. I wasn't there today so I don't know if they did arrive or not. What we are dealing with is more and more people. It's hard to forsee how many NEW pp are going to come each day, but EVery day more and more come and have needs and no one is turned away. This is what your money and donations are going to. People standing for something honorable, feeding the hungry, educating others who want to work for this. A snow storm in late October is unprecedented, even in NY. So we got caught off guard. This doesn't mean that we are not evolving each day. Within a week, I have seen major changes. WE have a clinic. WE have a tent for the large kitchen, a tent for all of the major posts now, which we didn't have just last week. It's coming together. I know it's frustrating to not get answers. This is not a perfect movement by any means. We are running out of room, for one thing. This park is very small, and it is now a sea of tents. There are working groups having round the clock meetings to find solutions to these issues. We were able to work through the issue with the drumming and we are going to work through the issues with the winter. I will personally post updates as I get them. Bless you All for supporting us.
please know that so many of us really do see you and get what you are doing. i personally pay attention to the weather at this point mainly in connection to how you guys are doing down there. we love you. we support you. we wish we could be with you!!!! i know there are many people on this site who are working some stuff out that maybe hard on your ears and spirits. but please know you are amazing a lot of us every day, showing us that it can be done. i am a disabled mom with a three year old and would be so grateful for a way to be among you more safely. please keep rocking on for all of us. we LOVE you!!!! thank for your tireless work, your tuchus-to-the-wall commitment, your courage, your willingness to put your lives on hold and your bodies on the line. i talk to my three-year-old child about you every day. i talk to him about US everyday. because what you are on the front lines doing everyday, is for us. THANK YOU. you have nothing to explain to anyone. xoxo
You should be "more responsible"? Really, people said that? They should be excited you made it this far.
yes, i read a post by someone named "happy" who was basically saying that they had supported us but they feel like we have "blown it" by showing our weakness in handling this big storm, which means we are either squandering our donations or not being responsible with the allocations of our funds.
"Happy" doesn't sound like someone you should want supporting you in my opinion.
apparently they were supporters at one point and are having grievances that they can not get any info about what our plan is for the winter. It's a valid concern and i wish it was "easier" for supporters who aren't on the ground to find the appropriate forums to get their questions answered, but the negativity has got to go...
Perhaps you should address his concerns. What do you plan to do with his money? What will you do if what RicoSuave says is true?
I don't work in finance with occupy so i don't do anything with his money. i volunteer my time, helping people get warm. i am going to try to attend meetings next week to see if i can get some answers to these questions.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news ... but .... the city, and Brookfield, won't let you keep the tents.
They will let you stay in the park .... but they will be down there this week to take the tents.
i was surprised to see so many tents up this week. They were not really up yet last week, just tarps here and there. I believe that the Medic tent will definitely be able to stay up. we'll see what happens. i am finding that the individual tents are only making the park smaller, and harder to maneuver through the park when we are working. i hope that there can be some kind of compromise, but who knows what 's going to happen.
