Forum Post: Doesn't Seem to Represent Me or Mine

Let me explain:

I am a conservative Republican. I sympathize strongly with the Tea Party movement, despite having never attended one. I didn't like the bailout, or the stimulus, or health care reform. Not because I hate Obama, I don't, but because I was raised on conservative principles.

I understand the anger that this particular movement feels. The country isn't exactly doing the best that it could be right now. But my question is this:

Why am I supposed to feel that YOU, who claim to represent me and mine, do?

I'm not saying this to be an a-hole, or even to be confrontational; I'm just curious. It seems like everyone wants this to be the new citizen's movement (I thought the Tea Party was fine but whatev), but it also seems like the OWLS (that;s what they call themselves right?) get pretty confrontational when challenged, or even when asked just what it is that they want. I know this is anecdotal and probably doesn't represent the entire movement, but I have been insulted for inquiring about the movement's purposes. Admittedly, I was being somewhat incredulous, because of the demands I had read earlier, which leads me to my next point:

I understand that the demands on the site don't represent anything but the opinion of ONE person. I get it. But you're willing to put it on the site for a reason, and I'm willing to bet that that reason is that it does represent the opinions, or something close to them, of most of the OWLS. And, again, not to be mean or confrontational: those demands aren't realistic, at all.

And I don't even want to argue about whether they are needed, or good, or whatever. Most of them just aren't going to happen, and some of them won't happen for very good reason. Debt forgiveness is from Fight Club, guys, and it was a joke in Fight Club. Even IF we agreed that we needed it, which we DO NOT, it still wouldn't happen. No politician on earth is going to actually advocate for that.

Now, I'm not expecting a full complete list of realistic policy demands that could be implemented right now, but that one list kind of gives off a sophomoric vibe. I'm young too, but I wasn't born yesterday, and starry-eyed idealism can only get you so far.

Part of the reason why the Tea Party resonates is because they have a simple message, a simple goal, and can focus on that simple message and goal WITHOUT having to be organized from the top down. Is there a simple message or goal of the OWS? If there isn't than I can't understand how you feel that this protest, which doesn't represent anything specific, can represent me or mine or the rest of the 99% that doesn't necessarily agree with you.

I've been told to come down, but that's impossible. I live about 3,000 miles away from New York. And even if I did, would I be welcome? I understand the idea that it's a protest for mostly leftist ideals, and I would understand if I wasn't all that welcome because, well, I'd be the odd man out. But then I hear that this IS supposed to represent everyone. How can you reconcile that with the almost certainty that I would NOT be welcome at your protest with my opinions?

I'm inclined to agree with you. I don't agree with this group claiming to represent me. I'm definately not part of the 1%, but I don't entirely agree with Occupy Wall Street's execution. There are better ways to handle this.
