even 15 years ago maybe 50% of products what we consumed came from the US. Right now we have a service based economy, and I would venture to guess that maybe 50% of our food comes from the US and we fortunately export more than we import, but well less than 10% of anything else is made in the US.

Please answer these questions:

What US made product can you get that replaces the ipod?

What US made product can replace my dell laptop (all computer support is in the US too?)

Le me try to figure out the last handful of non-food items that I bought recently and you tell me what the american made counterparts there are that are at a comparable price that I can afford?

1) house front door lock

2) gasoline

3) vacuum cleaner

4) cheap flip flops

So here is the problem. Almost all jobs left in the US are service based jobs that cannot be exported. I bet you I can list a dozen or so types of jobs that make up a vast majority of current US employment. These can't be outsourced because they have to be where the people are located:

1) Retail jobs - you must sell all these imported products to the people where they live locally. (from cashiers to regional managers to specialized parts salesmen to insurance salesmen)

2) Food service/ grocery - even for food that isn't grown here, you need the last hands the food passes through to be local (from farm workers to grocery stores to restaurant workers)

3) transportation/distribution systems for products - we have to have a way to transport all of our imported products into and across the US. (drivers and mechanics for buses, boats, planes etc.)

4) transportation for people - we still have a way to get around to all of our service jobs. (bus drivers, pilots, car salesmen, and mechanics)

5) health field - you still have to get checked out and treated locally. (doctors, nurses, medics, and staff)

6) military - you still have to be a US citizen to serve (soldiers)

7) entertainment industry - most of our entertainment is still US based (actors, musicians, athletes, tour guides, entertainers)

8) legal system - you have to be a US citizen or resident to practice most jobs (judges, lawyers, clerks)

9) hospitality (hotels, motels, restaurants)

10) public utilities (electric, phone, internet)

11) IT employees though this shrinks every day. Someone at work to monitor and upgrade your systems and computers (computer repairs, sys admins)

12) Religious and Education Institutions and Childcare - people who watch your kids while you pawn imported goods or relax for the weekend (from teachers to chancellors and pastors)

13) Consruction - They haven't figured out how to import houses or fix our roads from china yet (construction workers, civil engineers)

14) law enforcement - (cops, cia, fbi)

15) Administrative staff for all the above jobs (secretaries and miscellaneous paper pushers and office workers)

So I challenge you to name a job that there are a lot of that dont fit these categories. Nobody on this list produces any physical product except farmers. They are almost all services. It's cheaper to have someone in mexico or china make things because the costs are so much cheaper where the rights of laborers do not exist or are not enforced.

In short, how many people do you personally know that physically MAKE a US made product? A product that is even more than 50% made in the US? My guess is not many because there are not many US made products, there are only US services.

The only US factories left make or process food or alcohol, and most of that is automated. Actually most other products made in the US are made with automated systems. Ever see "How it's made?"

And therein lies the BIG problem. Look what we let our (business and government) leaders do to our country while most of us were asleep. I would suggest, however, that with the exception of electronics, possibly see if a product is available from somewhere besides Asia, (maybe Europe?), to keep China from grinding us further into the ground. I haven't yet researched this so I don't even know if it makes sense. Just a thought.

if you don't work how the hell are you going to survive? just yelling?.. There is not products made in USA. off course they are around they are not as good as Guillette, or Nike but that is the sacrifice, buy in a small store, buy organic That is most of the time local.

You're on the right track. A lot of us have been preaching this lately, but, of course, it works better in theory than in practice. It's still worth doing whenever possible, so don't let these naysayers discourage you. If we got enough people to start thinking this way though, it would cause a huge incentive for people to start manufacturing things here again. It would be a long process, but it may be possible in the long run.

Hewlett Packard laptops Made In China, Dell outsourcing customer service in India, production in China as well. USA CEO's a big/million dollars pay check, fat cats gave themselves a raise at a detriment of our unemployment. and then they blame everybody else, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Bla bla bla. If you received $100 from unemployment almost $80 will go to China to replenish their factories for a Chinese to produce what we consume in our every day life.

If you bother to study history, once a country sells out or loses it competitive edge it never comes back. Think tanning in Boston, or cotton-gins in old europe. It's one thing to build an empire, its another to keep. Study history. Probably the best book I have seen on this subject is Marc Faber's "Tomorrows Gold", he does an excellent job with citations of showing how&why each country has had their day ruling the world or an industry, and in every case it NEVER CAME BACK.
