No he did the right thing and he went to the government and made the government face this problem. What did we get out of it? Civil rights.
What did the black panther do? riot and caused damage. What did they achieve? not much as far as I know.
Look here guys our problem could be easily solved if we went to the government and tell them what is wrong. The government is here for a reason. The government is here to do what we ask them. We are the majority of the people we should have the say on what should happen.
Nothing will happen if we just sit here and protest against not even 1% of the population.
This could be solved and everyone could go home and have a better future if we just go to the government and tell them our demands, if they do not agree then it is time to abolish our government and create a new one.
Yes it is this simple. We need to be calm, and collected to reach our goal and we need to go the the right direction.
So if everyone just stop for a minute and re-think what they are doing then this problem will be fixed.
So bottom line is, we can fix our problem if we go to the government here and tell them what we want instead of being outside banks.
If the government doesnt work then change it. it is our right to do that.
MLK came late on the seen my brother. There were movements of black liberation all across the south. MLK was riding the wave of human protest that was sparked long before his arrival on the seen. In this sense, you must realize we are just beginning with this OWS movement.
Even the OWS protests are riding the wave of anti-WTO protests that have been going for the past 10-15 years. Remember Seattle 1999 where thousands of people were beaten and pepper-sprayed as they sat on the ground? The OWS movement has it easy compared to what others have been through.
scene* and why not go to the government for some change? why wall st?
because government has been bought by wall st......Wall Street is more or less the new sheriff in town
if that is the case then that means we need to change our government then. if this is how it is then I do not see why we aren't protesting against the government.
Well, this protest is not just directed at Wall St. It is also directed against the government. These two protest can be done simultaneously. There is no reason to think a multifaceted movement can not be possible
You are right. Let us start this multifaceted movement! Because this give more pressure to them.
"No he did the right thing and he went to the government and made the government face this problem. "
Are you serious, you aren't aware of the lunch counter sit-ins?
I think MLK coined the term "civil disobedience".
did he just sit in front of racist? no.
He brought the problem to the government.
My friend, the sit ins and the bus boycott were conducted against private interests who were engaging in discrimination. Those demonstrations forced those interests to change their policies.
This was without any formal intervention by the government.
This was all before the March on Washington which I believe took place in 1964.
did that change that make discrimination illegal?
Good point, but all things take time. OWS started just four weeks ago.
I have heard talk of a plan to march from NY to DC or something and right now there already is a group that formed in DC.
As someone else said below, there were many protest movements before the actual legal change took place. Give it time & keep giving your input.
I know. and I agree with the Wall St protest and all I've been trying to say is we could have a different tactic on this. right? And I think that protesting against the government is a better.
So if you agree then help out and spread the word.
Want to accomplish something? Find out who your representatives and congresspersons are and write them endlessly about what change you want, and that if you don't get it, your vote will be used to vote them out of office.
We should have a list of Politicians on our side... Politicians who will refuse Corporate donations. Politicians who will March with us.
I agree, best way to change is from within...
When's the next election?
We can start small perhaps... local elections, grass-roots... Congressional elections...
Let's take back America!
What I really respected about the Tea Party, was how they're an R, but they even kicked out some of their own members, and even controlled the dialog and direction of politics for the last year...
YES! exactly!
now just help out and spread the word!
How about the Montgomery bus boycott? That was RIGHT in front of the racists.
is that what gained us civil rights? no.
Again, we have to protest both.
Start with the government after that I wouldnt see the point of protesting against the banks because by the end of us protesting against the government the government will already change the the problem and we wouldnt have to protest against the bank.
We can protest randomly in the streets but we still need to protest at Wall Street because it's symbolic of the movement because AGAIN, we are also protesting the people on Wall Street not just policy.
Not true necessarily. You people need to understand that the OWS is also a protest againt government policies but we can't protest outside the white house or capital we will be removed.
not if there are thousands of people. There is nothing more powerful than people power.
Tanks, shit loads of guns firing at us. Thousands, no. Millions, maybe. I mean, look at the Arab countries where there governments fought back like Lybia. If it wasn't for NATO the rebels would still be far east of Tripoli and making no progress. Besides what's so bad about protesting at Wall Street?
Nothing is bad about protesting at Wall Street. It would just be more effective if we went to the government. And if you think that the government will fire at us you are... how do I say this.... stupid.
What do you mean by "go to the government"? How? You mean just writing our congressman or large masses outside the white house in which case i would support that but they will most certainly use force if we try to get into the white house yes they will.
I mean by that is do what we are doing in wall st but have elected representatives to represent us and tell them what we want. If we have enough people then the change will happen.
Yes I guess that's one way but only if you're talking about a revolution. Remember the politicians pretty much work for wall street so they are not just gonna go against cuz we ask. If you aren't talking about revolution then protesting at wall street is better because they control most of the politicians.
If the government doesnt do what the people want then we have some serious problems.
I agree.
So if we all agree here then spread the word and have a new plan.
