Forum Post: Day Trading Eclipses Corporate Greed

Posted 13 years ago on Oct. 26, 2011, 5:19 a.m. EST by RonPaul (0)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

Day trading is a terrible selfish act that is exploiting the American people. A day trader is not an investor. They do not have interest investing in a corporation to build a better America. They are not interested in the growth of American companies and the employment of the American people. Day traders use volatility of stock markets to skim a profit with day, hour, or minute trades. This type of trading further increases the volatility. It creates a feedback cycle that if allowed to continue will prolong the current suffering of the American people. These trades are having numerous negative effects on our economy including artificial inflation of stock prices, flash market crashes, and the creation of bubbles. These effects cause companies to fail and others to become over-valued. These effects cost Americans jobs and retirement investments. What is to come as more trades are made by computer programs and artificial intelligence with micro-second trades in order to capitalize on small fluctuations in stock value? What is to come as the efficiency of the day trade skimming increases? Do we as Americans want an increasingly volatile stock market or do we want increasing stability in the stock market? We as Americans cannot allow this greed to continue weakening a backbone of our economy. We must end day trading. The stock markets need investors for a better America. The stock markets need to be free of the few selfish who are using exploits at the expense of the American people.

Please get this message out to America.

I cannot agree more.

"America, this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page of the policies of the past."

[-] 21 points by HillaryClinton (33) 13 years ago

Mr. O... What has changed?

[-] 5 points by mgiddin1 (1057) from Linthicum, MD 13 years ago

Answer: everything you wanted me to stop, I have continued full force ahead in Bush's footsteps. As the freight train heads towards the proverbial cliff, I'm adding more fuel to the steam engine! And more drones to our arsenal, more U.S. citizen 'terrorists' to our assassination list, more nukes to threaten other nations with, more prisoners at Gitmo, more torture professionals to glean important sensitive 'information', more bailouts for your favorite corporations, more funny money, and more bonuses for CEO fatcats.

[-] 20 points by GildedAge (20) 13 years ago

But what will become of me?

[-] 1 points by nichole (525) 13 years ago

Yes, your own self-interest trumps all. Perhaps you may be relocated, to a less-than-gilded age, one where you will have to work and struggle and hopefully recognize the humanity within you that you didn't know existed.

RonPaul and BarackObama in agreement. I'm not sure what to think about that.

[-] 2 points by mgiddin1 (1057) from Linthicum, MD 13 years ago

Since when? I don't think they agree on much, if anything.

I didn't mean the politicians. It was a joke in reference to the username that started the post and the first poster on this thread. What makes it all the more hilarious are the other usernames I just noticed when I scanned down the page. Big time ROFLMAO :-)))) This was the funniest post I've seen since I got on this site. Glad to see so many of us still have a sense of humor.

My 9-9-9 plan is the answer to this issue. See, I'll tax the day traders with my 9-9-9 and then the govenrment will have a lot more money. With all this extra money the government could hire all you occupiers that have not found a job due to the volatile nature of the stock market being exploited by day traders.

[-] 26 points by MichelleBachman2012 (45) 13 years ago

Flip that 9-9-9 over and you get 6-6-6. The devil is in the details! The devil is clever enough to trick Mr. Cain into approving the mark of the beast. We will all perish if we don't destroy Islam.

Hello My Children,

I know you are all angry at the moment. Don't be mad at corporations. Corporations are good but just like day traders they will take advantages of any available exploit.

You all need to quit praying and learn to stand up for yourself. You Americans seem to have forgot how to stand up to problems wherever they may be. Stand up to your Government for me since I don't think I'll be making any appearances soon. You have to make a change since Mr. Obama is a little slow in that department.

P.S. Mary wasn't a virgin but she was still a good lay. Oh and if Jesus was really my demigod offspring then he would have at least been able to fly.

Also, isn't he said to have sort of 'floated' up to heaven at some point, after he grew tired of hanging with the Apostles in his post-crucifixion sort of 'transparent Obi-Wan Kenobi' form? Hi everyone,

Up here in heaven I'll be pleased to all let you know they allow all Apple products. Yeah, God just sent me a text saying the day traders are going to hell along with Google.

On another note God also told me that I should not have tried those weird non-legitemate too good to be true cancer cures. Apparently I would have done better with board certified physicians.

[-] 28 points by MittRomney (28) 13 years ago

Don't worry about the day traders. Everything will be fine as soon as I am president. I am following in the footsteps of the mormon prophet Joseph Smith's 1844 Presidential campaign who directly pushed modern revelation in what he called "theodemocracy," the blending of religious belief and democracy. I have a testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith.

[-] 20 points by God (106) 13 years ago

Mr. Romney, I hope you ascend to presidency. Only then will the earth glaze over into a glass like celestial body.

P.S. Do more baptisms', washing and anointings', endowments, marriage sealings for the dead.

[-] 11 points by Dubby (146) 13 years ago

I'm so totally glad you finally joined in! Are you still into burnt offerings or have you kind of moved on from that? And have you ever considered rethinking your stance on adultery, you know given modern times and all? Oh yeah and what about the pope?

[-] 14 points by God (106) 13 years ago

Where to begin? The Pope has an ego problem butt at least he finally accepts condoms and gay sex. http://thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/pope-condoms-for-male-hookers-ok-condoms-to-fight-hiv-not-ok/news/2010/11/21/15471

I apologize for the bible. The writings were meant the lesser evolved people of those days. You might as well cross it all out.

Adultery these days really just means lying. I mean do all the hot chicks you wanna do. Why do you think I slayed that Mary chick? Anyways Mrs. God and my 3 gay husbands were cool with it.

Anyways I would trust the Stock Market about as much Jesus should have trusted Judas. I think Jesus's ego got in the way.

"Day Trading" and "Flash Trading" are very different.

Day traders employ some degree of analysis and accept risk that the market turns against them. They make money sometimes & lose money sometimes, but they trade in the same markets, and in the same manner as other traders. They generally add to liquidity and price-discovery, though they may increase volatility.

Flash Trades are executed by computer algorithm. Flash traders are super-rich who buy their way ahead of other traders by a micro-second and make money by trading massive amounts of stock and making a fraction-of-a-penny on each share. Flash traders add to volatility, but do not add to liquidity or price discovery.

A reasonable solution might be a very very small tax on all financial transactions (I've seen 0.005% proposed). This would greatly reduce Flash Trades, creating a fairer and better-functioning market.

Such a tax might be sufficient to reduce Day Trades to some extent, but day trades do not create an unfair or dysfunctional market the way Flash Trades do.

Flash Trades are the problem...and a very very small tax could be the answer.

[-] 7 points by RushLimbaugh (7) 13 years ago

Agree. Also longer it takes to buy or sell stock would increase the reality of the market. It adds more weight to financial decisions.

How would you stop it?

[-] 1 points by tstorey (17) from Newport, RI 13 years ago

I think you make sense, but, you might be missing something. 90% of the stock and commodity trading markets are a legitimate casino. They really don't do anything, if you study their process. They are all just BETS. A day trader is gambling against other day traders. One bets an up tick and the other bets a down. One guy wins.

The stock market too is a casino. Shares are junior corporate debt. If the company weakens the shareholder gets nothing. It is only a finance scheme for companies which allows them to print their own currency (shares). A bond is a legitimate debt instrument, a share of stock has no backing of any kind....go look at the nasdaq in 1998, brother...look at the charts....it all turned into nothing in a matter of weeks. Stock markets are a casino and we are not the owners. I have been there and followed it for years...the NYSE is a rig job. Sure it makes the players a lot of money...there aren't many players...the rest of the folks just get a hair cut....I'm bald.

It's not day traders, it's high speed computer program trading. Most day traders loose money, few make money but most don't affect the market in a big way. Big investment houses and banks use high speed computer trading that moves in seconds. They take huge positions and when things go wrong they go wrong in a big way, That's what causes flash crashes it's not even people pushing buttons, it's the computer doing it and it's not some daytrader sitting home on a laptop it's Goldman sacs and Morgan Stanley. Not only are they skimming money from your 401k's they are using leveraged money from the fed or your bank deposits to do it with. Bringing back Glass/Steagle would do a lot to help. Not letting banks do proprietary trading would help. Not letting Investment banks and hedge funds over leverage is also important and I think high speed electronic trading should be illegal. I think position limits on commodities for folks not involved in the actual use of the underling asset would also help. There is no reason we should pay more for food and gas because those markets have been cornered by traders, once again probly using leverage backed by your bank deposits

[-] 1 points by bankster50 (9) 13 years ago

day trading is a moronic thing to do but it REDUCES volatility.

[-] 1 points by Bahia (1) 13 years ago

You are clueless if you think the few dollars of an active individual investor cause significant moves in the market. It is the computerized high frequency trading that causes the crazy volitility. The Wall Street types would love for you to believe that their black box trades are helpful to liquidity. Don't beat up the little guy.

[-] 1 points by Markmad (323) 13 years ago

You are delusional! You right wingers cannot reason anymore, your ideology has scared you to a point of no return. You need to educate yourself in order to form your own opinion. Stop repeating nonsense.

[-] 1 points by michael4ows (224) from Mountain View, CA 13 years ago

day traders aren't evil? i think you're confusing day traders with "high frequency trading" systems. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-frequency_trading

[-] 3 points by garbagemancan (3) 13 years ago

Ouch!!! HFC sounds scary. It's the same point. HFC or DTrading is all about the individual making profits for their self and not truly investing in a company. The stockmarket is really sick these days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_trading

[-] 1 points by michael4ows (224) from Mountain View, CA 13 years ago

The ginormous HFT's are questionable (GS and other big investment banks run these things and pump gazillions thru them)... but "momentum trading" (aka day trading) in and of itself is a perfectly valid strategy, and one that helps market prices move to where they should... and yes it is about making money... theres nothing wrong with that. A big aspect of starting businesses or working a job (or day trading) is to make money to feed families, nothing evil or selfish about it.

[-] 1 points by Mooks (1985) 13 years ago

Anyone who invests in a company, whether it is for 35 seconds or 35 years, is doing it for personal profit.

[-] 1 points by gtyper (477) from San Antonio, TX 13 years ago

Let's be honest - the stock market, regardless of day trading, is no longer really about creating value or investment in companies.

After the IPO, it's just gambling. There is no real investment going on. There is no "growth" being created.

Day traders feed on this, but to think that anything other than the initial IPOs is anything more than straight speculation is a little disingenuous.

[-] 7 points by IPayTaxes (10) 13 years ago

Bump! The stock market is total sh!t these days. Companies these days don't raise capital to further the company. Companies instead pay their CEO'S extreme wages in order to pull as much money out of the company before they sell it. In the end the masses of the public lose their 401K and other investments. The stock market is Fff'ed

[-] 1 points by Libertarianliving (149) 13 years ago

Then why don't YOU become a CEO and reap the benefits from it. Or start your own company, ask that all your workers, janitors, security, maintenance, guys that carry boxes, etc. all get Union backing, don't pay yourself anymore than them, and give your CEOs minimum wage. Problem solved.

[-] 1 points by Mooks (1985) 13 years ago

You do realize that the vast majority of a CEO's compensation package is in the form of stock options? To say they don't have a vested option in the share price is completely false.
