Such brutality is par for the course for today's militarized police and campus security departments. What's really disgusting is the natural instinct of so many conservatives to stick up for the police. They don't like the Occupy protesters, so they willingly back brutality against them, without considering the possibility that conservatives at some point might be on the receiving end of this aggression. Then again, this common, vulgar form of modern conservatism almost always sides with the state, even as it champions the empty words of limited government.
Actually I know a lot of conservatives that were outraged by the spraying.
The students were not pepper sprayed by cops they were sprayed by campus security. Campus security is usually made up of the people that did not make it into the police force and do not have significant training.
The school chancelor should not have called them out. The kids were not really blocking access to class. If someone in a wheelchair needed to get by I am sure they would have moved.
I'm not sure about that Joe. Campus police in some states like Colorado are actually representatives of the state and have as much authority as state police officers.
I am sure about that.
The City of Davis police were called in and arrived toward the end of the incident and were not involved in the pepper spraying by the campus security loser.
Still have to disagree on the overall assessment of campus police officers. It may depend on the area but in California the campus police are state certified officers with all of the authority of a regular policeman. Many of them are former military MP's and officers who have families seeking a bit more security.
"What is the difference between university police officers and other law enforcement officers?
California State University police officers are regular state-certified peace officers, with all the training, certification, and authority that a City police officer or County Sheriff might have. This includes patrolling, making traffic stops, responding to crimes in progress, conducting investigations, writing citations, detaining and arresting violators, etc. As a service-oriented department, our officers assist people with a variety of non-criminal calls on campus, and are also first responders to medical, rescue, and fire emergencies.
University police also possess special authority to initiate sanctions against persons interfering with the academic mission, including ordering dangerous or disruptive persons off-campus, and reporting violations of the Student Code of Conduct to the Dean of Students.
Where does UPD's legal authority come from? University police are empowered with legal authority as state peace officers and staff members through the California Penal Code, the California Education Code, and the California Code of Regulations. University police at Humboldt and every other CSU campus are armed when on duty, in accordance with Chancellor's statewide directives first issued in 1975."

ahhh BS.
conservatives like myself would have Conserved our pepper spray until it turned into another yelling spitting and shitting on public service vehicles mob.
no one liked to see that. No One except a few idiots who like that sort of entertainment, AND the media who draws ratings from the like.
it looked almost STAGED to draw sympathy for the movement, and as much money is there is flowing in the coffers?
I wouldn't be surprised to find out the officer who sprayed them doesn't have a nice fat check in his mailbox from the community activist party.
Is it any wonder why I still believe OWS best chance of making an impact is OWS co-opting the dems? I understand the desire for a truly independent movement but if we want to impact the American political scene we need to make inroads in DC and at the local level.
Excuse me? I have yet to meet a Conservative that has "sided with pepper spraying thugs".
It's not just Conservatives that don't like WHAT the occupiers are doing...It's many of the 99% that feel that way.
Watch Fox much? Bill O'Reilly compared the spray used to a food product.
Yeah I do.I am addicted to FOX.I don't pay attention to O'Reilly or Hannity. They are entertainers not news people.
You get the news during the day on FOX.
BTW...O'Reilly isn't a conservative.FYI......."I'm not a political guy in the sense that I embrace an ideology. To this day I'm an independent thinker, an independent voter, I'm a registered independent... there are certain fundamental things that this country was founded upon that I respect and don't want changed. That separates me from the secularists who want a complete overhaul of how the country is run"
If indeed you have ever listened to the guy you would already know this.
Have a great day
FYI... a new poll shows that viewers of Fox news actually know less about the news then people who don't watch the news at all.
http://publicmind.fdu.edu/2011/knowless/
heehee where the heck is that poll from? Quite honestly seeing there is "edu" in the addy I won't bother looking. The poll is a liberal poll. Everyone I know who watches FOX news are brilliant successful people who could out talk idiots any day of the week.
I don't know what you are smoking...but I sure would like some. :)
Nope I keep it all for myself
These brave young students may become the equivalent image to the Vietnamese officer shooting a prisoner in the head at point blank range.
Why is the sprayer not arrested for battery?
He was not even a policeman!
Advice- carry a WET small (12x18") US flag folded in a zip lock bag -
put over your face if attacked.
Don't you think that's a pretty big reach? You're equating being pepper sprayed with being shot in the head. That's a big difference.
yes- i agree - the monsterous murder by authority in Vietnam is not equivalent - but the iconic IMAGE seems to be
I don't think so. The whole situation could have been avoided had they listened to the police.
The whole situation could have been avoided had they listened to the police - they were just following orders
This is a thoughtful commentary on the pepper spraying:

Hard to side with the protesters when they are provoking the reaction. Notice none of these so called incidents of violence that are filmed, include any of the lead up to the incident, like the officers asking nicely for people to move. http://vnnforum.com/showthread.php?p=1333630 "It is worth noting that one of OTPOR's tactics is "not try to avoid arrests", but rather to "provoke them and use them to the movement's advantage." as a PR strategy.
Wow....I didn't think there was anyone left with that much denial. I stand corrected. You would have made a great assistant to Joseph Goebbels.
Spare me your outrage. You clearly don't even read or know what is going on. This is all done purposely to get people like you all wound up so you will join their cause. You are a sheep by falling for this old tactic.
