I actually have not been involved in the protests, which some may say I do not have a place to comment. I will, however, make a comment and hope someone listens. I agree with Occupy Wallstreet’s position wholeheartedly. I am truly scared for the future of this country.
I agree with MS that you need to have a Platform. I like how your “Petition of Grievances” has a meeting take place on July 4th, 2012. I think it gives time for the message it get out. If I was organizing your group I would spend the next couple of months spreading the word in states that I grossly affected by outsourcing and inequality, however, as the book “What’s the Matter with Kansas” argues consistently vote against their economic interests. You need to educate people in these areas and make it clear that the people and causes they perceive to be the reasons for their problems are the wrong enemies. I would recommend that when you protest in these areas you might want to come up with an alternate tactics then used in more progressive areas. The message you have in a very new one and there will naturally be resistance. Therefore, it needs to be packaged in a way that allows acceptance to be a bit easier. This might mean that the persons delivering the message might need to be dressed more like the people in the areas they go into. I know this is a controversial message, because it is important to not judge people based on how they look. However, unfortunately, it is part of the human condition to judge. And, I believe that the primary purpose of the protests is to make governmental and economic change. I would also when making public appearances on CNN dress more similar to mainstream. Again, I know this is controversial, but please understand this is coming from a supporter and someone who wants your message to get across and your platform to be successful. It is kind of like the intruders on the show “V”, you have to look and talk like them to get them to hear your message.
Now on to my opinion about the platform. In addition, to having the “Petition of Grievances” I would make recommendations to people about simple things they can do to make a difference. Some people who may want to make a difference do not have time and the education to think about simple things they can do. For example, tell people to not use automated checkout lines at grocery stores, and rather take the time to get a human cashier. Things like this do not cost any more money but help people keep jobs. Again, making suggestions to people will help them to feel empowered to make changes.
I like the “Petition of Grievances” for many reasons. But I am going to tell you my suggestions first. As an attorney, I would strongly suggest that you get an attorney with knowledge of Constitutional Law to help you write the “Petition”. You want the “Petition” to have demands that CAN be passed within our governmental system. For example, in the “Petition” you talk a lot about campaign finance reform. I am assuming you know about the Supreme Court decisions that make it very hard to make changes to campaign finance. What this means is that you need to have an amendment to the Constitution to make this happen. At this current state in politics that is not realistic UNLESS you get residents of state that vote more conservative to understand the problems of campaign finance. See comment above. I like how your “Petition” addresses issues that are on “both sides of the table”. This will make it easier for you to get people in critical states on board with the movement. When you organizer in those areas stress those points first.
I have to end my point, my son calls, but great job on the movement, and if I can help in any way I would love to. Sincerely, EE12
I think we should create one platform and put it up to a vote, a Constitutionally voted-in revolution: http://www.JeffBlock2012.com
Also, we should make all the bankers wear monocles and pinstriped suits so we can identify and scapegoat them easier. It would be just like we did in ancient WW2 times with the star of David, only much more fashionable. Retro is in right now.
The most simple thing to do is to fight for democracy. Through campaign finance reform and getting the money out of our political system. I don't know the legalities, but I know that this is the root cause of the problem. I don't know how to make it happen in the legal sense. But I know that I can tell other people about it. It is realistic to believe this could happen if the 99% speak out for it. You can help! You are helping now! Tell 2 people, 10 people 100 people! Join people on the streets and fight for it. Speak loudly, passionately and peace-ably! If you believe in it - tell 2 people and more!
EE12, I fear that the time to work within the confines of the Government may be past. It is time to take back America from the special interests and the 1%. The Government needs our help to be able to make a change. I love the theory that we can vote the right people into office and they will fix it for us. But, that just can't happen. They can't fight against our Feudalistic Capitalist Kings and Queens.
First, this is not a political movement. It has nothing to do with being a Liberal or Conservative, Democrat or Republican, Muslim or Jew or Christian or Atheist. It has nothing to do with the Left or the Right. This is a Financial Revolution. This is a revolt of the 99% that are throwing off the yoke of financial oppression to free our Government from the corrupt control of the 1%. We are no longer willing to sit idly by and just voting in hopes that the elected officials will ignore the puppet strings and do what is right. We are taking our future into our own hands and standing up to fight for what we believe in, a Government for the People by the People.
We live in a Feudalistic Capitalist society governed not by the elected officials but by the person who donates the most money to their cause. The top 1% controls the money and thus controls the laws, fixing them to better themselves rather than better the 99%. So we, the serfs, are rising up against our oppressors. We will fight for ourselves. We will not ignore the 1% mocking us while they sip champagne and wonder "Why do they starve when they can eat cake." Like the American and French Revolutions we will rise against the Monarchy and attain our freedom.
In a modern American society it is virtually impossible to violently fight a rebellion against the 1%. The military industrial complex has insured that the general populace can not compete in an arms race. The 2nd amendment was intended to keep the Government honest with the ability of the populace to rise up if it ever overstepped it's bounds. The forefathers did not envision a future of smart bombs, drone airplanes, and tomahawk missiles. So what weapons can we fight with to effect this Financial Revolution? What peaceful, civil, and responsible solutions is there? We have, our money.
We will cripple the banks by refusing to acknowledge their credit system. We will en mass refuse to pay our mortgages, car loans, student loans, credit cards, unpaid medical bills, insurance, etc. We will couple this with pulling our money out of their Banks. Unified, we will force the banks to relinquish their control on the Government so that the Government can do what they need to do to correct the system. Meanwhile, we will still go to work, buy groceries, pay our utilities, and live normal lives.
The 1% have to be accountable for their actions. They have to relinquish control. They can not live in their ivory towers and ignore us anymore. The 99% are here to fight for our country. We are American and we believe that the American Dream is still alive. We just have to work hard to wrest it from the iron grip of our oppressors.
