Forum Post: CO Recall Proves they have the Gun Nuts, but We have the Numbers

Gun nuts and NRA bagmen snicker with glee as they succeeded in ousting two Colorado legislators who backed gun regulations. The ouster is supposed to convey the message "Mess with gun laws and say adios." But with only about a 30+% turnout, the message should be "They have the guns, but we have the Numbers!" And in democracy, NUMBERS WIN!!

Get Out the VOTE!

That their reckless gun advocating and ignorant understanding of the 2nd amendment they hang their zealotry on gets about 30K Americans killed a year is of no concern to them. And as long as hundreds of millions of Arms Industry dollars keeps rolling in, the profiteers couldn't care less.

After this NYT Editorial is a factual study (compared to NRA propaganda) on the health effects of our insane gun laws!

Hard Lessons of the Colorado Recall

By THE NYT EDITORIAL BOARD

The Colorado Legislature showed good sense when it voted in March to require universal background checks in the sale of firearms and limits on magazine clips to 15 rounds.

• Colorado Lawmakers Ousted in Recall Vote Over Gun Law (September 11, 2013)

On Tuesday, two state senators who supported the gun control laws lost recall votes in two small districts in Colorado. Their ousters were a disgraceful low point in punitive single-issue politicking by the gun lobby.

The two lawmakers — the Senate president, John Morse, and Senator Angela Giron — are exemplary models of responsible public service. As members of a resolute Democratic statehouse majority, the two showed more political courage in facing up to the gun mayhem afflicting the nation than the Congress did in April in its shameful retreat from tightening gun laws that allow tens of thousands of deaths each year.

The recalled lawmakers knew the gun lobby would pounce on their votes, but they stood up for the badly needed laws that Congress ducked. Mr. Morse, a former police chief, helped lead the charge against the battlefield-styled weapons used in the school massacre in Newtown, Conn., and in Colorado’s own carnage last year at the Aurora movie theater.

The act of the Legislature and Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, represents an important transition in Colorado, long considered a bastion of rural gun rights. Urban interests and their politicians are more willing to push for sane gun controls; the background check law was supported by 80 percent of state residents polled. The task of the recall proponents, however, was made easier by a controversial ruling against mail balloting, normally heavily relied on by state voters.

The gun lobby is congratulating itself on this vote, aiming to use the recall as the ultimate warning against politicians who might abandon timorousness in the gun control debate. In truth, the recall fight showed that something sensible and stirring could emerge among politicians, at least in Colorado, even if two worthy incumbents were sacrificed. The state’s new laws survive, and Colorado residents are safer for them.

Based on your headline, I'm not sure you understand how elections work.

This is what happens when people don't Vote, as 2010 showed. Big Money railroads in their loyal kooks and rotten laws, and ousts the good guys and laws.

Blah, blah, blah. The only "numbers" gun grabbers have are Bloomberg's billions and it is becoming evident that the rest of America outside nyc has no use for or appreciate him interfering in their business.

And I see this NYT guy is misrepresenting the 30k gun death figure that is over 1/.2 suicides.

It may be a cliché, but that doesn't make it any less true GUNS DON'T KILL...PEOPLE DO

The point here is lives, and you say Blah, blah, blah; that's why you lose.

The fantasy Wild West and it's gun prop was a fictitious advertising campaign turned folklore turned film and TV western turned RW individualist anti-New Deal-government propaganda. You gun nut assholes have been tolerated and placated because of a long gone/overshadowed American Sportsman heritage. Now innocent Americans are getting harmed and killed by the thousands every year, and their rights TO NOT GET SHOT supersede your misinterpretation of the obsolete old muskets and militia #2. We have police and military for that now. You can have a private club or a park, but the guns stay there. Not ONE American should die for your asinine, archaic, uncontrollable and dangerous HOBBY!!! You idiots Blew it!!

If your reply here made the least bit of sense, I might be able to formulate a reply.

It's almost as ridiculous as the NYT op ed you posted
