This story is absolutly appaling. WTF AMERICA!!!
In fact, I am pretty sure that the entire Social Security Administration Act of 1992 and the international Agreement with the United Kingdom and United States are not handed over for review prior to signing at the hospital.
The Washington Post ran a story with a slightly different take, suggesting some parents still did refuse and that the coercion used was still a matter of threats and jail rather than physical force. Nonetheless I have to agree with AAPS on this one ( http://www.aapsonline.org/press/nr-11-16-07.php ). Coercing vaccination at all costs violates fundamental principles of informed consent that were established at the end of the second World War to prevent monstrous abuses. Even though the choice to vaccinate one child doesn't sound like a Mengele offense, the point is, if we allow politicians to break through the ideological fence, where are they going to stop? We should respect the right of all people to make their own decisions, even unhealthy decisions, and be ready to learn all we can from those who make themselves a natural control group for studies of the effects of vaccination.
If we want to increase vaccination rates, instead of using force, we should ensure that everyone who needs a vaccine can receive it for free as a basic public health service, ensure that the contact lists mentioned in the Washington Post article are up to date, and research any alleged health risks fully and when they are discredited (as with autism) ensure the public hears about it. This is a situation where force truly is the last refuge of the incompetent.
The real question is WTF are they really giving these kids? They seem pretty hell bent on vaccinating them. No f-ing way I would let my child be forcibly vaccinated.

Why do you find it appalling? I'm amazed at how many parents mindlessly signed the Social Security Contract, at the hospital and upon the births of their children and have to wonder why the State has every legal right to do this.

These children are de facto wards of The State and the biological units are merely custodial guardians.
Legal? Yes, the parents signed assuming it was the right thing to do and completely harmless because the hospital people said so and that everyone else signs, they even tell you it is mandatory and without it your child cannot receive medical attention, have insurance or register for school.
Lawful? That's another matter as it would be easy enough to prove that without a legal specialist present, many reasonable persons have no idea what exactly that contract, they all signed, actually means, what consent they unknowingly gave, what rights they indeed waived, and very few would have ever signed it if they truly had any idea of it's true meanings and intended purposes.
When you hear return The Rule of Law, these are the type things to which it refers.
