the Occupy Wall Street movement is growing but when push comes to shove the city can do a lot more to shut the movement down. Invoking local ordinance to effectively deny the right of assembly and free speech is a clear violation of the first amendment. but with established mainstream media still showcasing the movement in a negative light it is stil very vulnerable to being shut down. it could be at the discretion of the politicians and the police to exploit the smallest acts of violence to more serious suppression of protesting. the movement and the individual protesters need to make sure that the police are on their side as well. that we are protesting for them as well. with their sympathies the movement can assure it's continuing "occupation.
Well there was that chant:
"officer your cute, take off your riot suit" but I don't think they wanted to be charmed like that, well at least not while on duty.
lisa,
that's more like mocking them. the police are predominantly lower middle class and are not stupid ( as individuals anyway). appealing to their own financial concerns is the way to go. how about chants along the lines of, are you happy with your health insurance?" you like your union protecting you, why shouldn't why shouldn't other have theirs?"
In the 1960's anti-war movement they used to give flowers to the police. But this is 2012
So next time a police officer tries to book you for a minor infraction, like not staying on the sidewalk, while you are peacefully protesting, give him or her a Tiny Replica American Flag.
