I am not an american. I am not even north american. I just happen to be in your area at this point of time. I, frankly, cannot lay claim to understanding all the issues which you face. I try to follow the issues, very religiously , almost on an hourly basis to the point of being called a news junkie. I love to have a strong america leading the world rather than a Chinese dragon on prowl, which is what we might end up with. I believe, even with all the instances of alleged misuse of global clout there is no country in the world to swap places with this great nation. I am thrilled to witness the awakening of youthful energy that is represented by the OWS movement. For one, it disproved my notion that americans will not risk leaving the comforts of their homes to sit in the streets in support of an ideal. I salute you for braving the october snow and the oakland police. I salute you for making me convinced that the youth knows what is being lost in political quagmire and economic thuggery and that they care about it as passionately as it can be. I salute you for largely ignoring the mainstream media's portrayal of you as disenchanted youth out to demand the unattainable. I salute you for turning conventional wisdom on it's head by proving that in today's connected age we don't need a leader to power a mass movement. I have an idea which you might find interesting or at least worth a debate amongst yourselves - Invite/challenge/advice two men (or women) of stature to declare their candidacy for the next year's election. You support them on conditions - one, they will not accept donations from any business or lobby. You, the 99% will fund them by means of small donations. You, the 99% will leverage social media and internet to run an unconventional campaign - a campaign that reaches the maximum people at the lowest cost. Challenge the conventional candidates in the fray for live debates - debates conducted at public parks and streamed live on youtube and similar platforms. You may not win the 2012 election but you are sure to achieve one thing - you will, for the first time in american history demonstrate the viability and promise of a third front in american politics - a voice that is different from the old camps of american politics who have long grown accustomed to the musical chair of power. Such a bid will automatically force the right, left and centre politicians to consider you as a genuine force to reckon with. Because, in a democracy the ballet is the most powerful weapon.
Only when vote banks are threatened does a career politician sit up and notice
Good idea. Now all we need is a democracy! (-:
