Capitalism in a nutshell

  1. I have an idea for a great product
  2. I have no collateral so the banks will not lend me money
  3. I sell shares of stock to people willing to risk their money
  4. My idea fails and the investors lose their money. I owe them nothing
  5. My idea succeeds and we all make money!

Crony Capitalism in a nutshell

  1. I have an idea that really sucks.
  2. I have friends in high places in D.C.
  3. My friends in D.C. give me Capital
  4. My company fails because it was a bad idea.
  5. The tax payers pay the bill.

That's about as clear as one can make it! Well done.

If this movement was about rooting out crony capitalism and getting back to true capitalism it would get much more support from the "99%". Unfortunately most seem to be confusing crony capitalism for the real thing and calling for total socialist reform of our economy, which needless to say will only make the symptoms of the problem worse.

Very true.

You hit it on the head!!! What we have now is "neo-feudalism." If America does not wake up we can count on our children becoming the 21st century equivalent of the medieval "landless peasant."

My 2 cents: For decades now the corporations and special interests have had our "representatives" bought and paid for (both on the right and the left). Don't get distracted by the symptoms - we need to address the root cause. Concentrating our efforts on getting the money out of our politics is the best way we can create an environment in which further reforms can be realized. Until we end the current system of legalized bribery (campaign donations) and paid lobbying our politicians will continue to be the LAP DOGS of the corporations and special interests. What we need first and foremost is real, loop-hole free CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM!!!! If the corruption is not dealt with first, the chance of any other meaningful reforms becoming a reality is almost zero - the special interests will just use their money to buy votes and put forward bills that create loop-holes or otherwise twist the law in their favor. If we want our children to live in a country where there vote matters, we need to get the money out of our politics. Spread the word - End the LEGALIZED BRIBERY!!! CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM needs to be THE main goal of the protests!!!

sounds like "Crony Capitalist" is just another term for Liberal Democrat.

Capitalism is capitalism. An idea that "sucks" in this profitsystem may increase GNP and make a corporation and it´s stock holders money-rich yet destroy environment, indirectly kill people, exploit children, generate waste and other bad things. One of capitalisms most important institutions is the corporation and one of the main problems we are facing is the rights and freedoms given to corporations by law. You can learn all about it from Joel Bakan´s exellent book "The Corporation - The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power", for example. But these laws are not laws of nature, they can be changed.

(capitalism and the money system makes the irrational rational)

Capitalism does not suck. Without it people with great ides and no equity would not have a change to turn their idea into a product or service. Capitalism is about taking risk.

Example: Steve Jobs dumped about $10 million a year into Pixar for ten years and lost money all of those years. He believed in the idea when no one else did. Eventually the idea paid off big time.

Lol except where Capitalism involves the banks, then instead of going bust and the investors loosing money... They break the rules and turn it all into a crony capitalist paradise. Under the guise of doing us all a favor, then they try to make more money with what amounts to government funded evictions. Oh yeah, and why is this possible, because the bankruptcy laws that were their to protect the people were eliminated by the last administration.

capitalism noun, a welfare system that caters exclusively to corporations and the wealthy.

[-] 2 points by DudleyE (94) 13 years ago

Somehow I don't think that definition came from Websters.

[-] 1 points by JoeTheFarmer (2654) 13 years ago

That is Crony Capitalism. Read what I wrote again.

I think nucleus just proved DudleyE's point.

What is wrong with his first one above? Normal capitalism.

Nothing is wrong with the first one. It is a great system.
