Firstly, I want to say that I appreciate that the Occupiers are bringing attention to the glaring systematic inequality between the 1% and the 99%. I am the 99%, too. I cannot join the protests in New York, but I have ideas that I would like to submit to the community for consideration and refinement. To start, the term "Capitalism 2.0" can resonate with the mainstream Americans we need without posing a threat to their way of life and its perceived benefits.
The Occupy Wall Street movement has succeeded in getting the attention, but it's apparent that the message is being obscured by knee-jerk reactions in the media. Instead of treating media outlets as the enemy, OWS should be reaching out to the media for interviews with our most effective communicators. When Americans watch an interview with an OWS representative, he or she should feel compelled to evaluate the message without being distracted by the person's appearance. An interview in the media should be treated the same as an interview for a highly sought after job. We are essentially applying for the trust and attention of mainstream America. If we disregard the mainstream, we will fail. We must make a good impression before they have a chance to blink. The Occupy movement needs to arrange hour-long specials on as many networks as possible, even if the networks are combatitive. Interviewees will be frequently interrupted, but must not lose patience or be defeated by hostile pundits. Diflect attempts to steer the conversation towards socialism and other currently unpopular ideas. The focus must stay on corporate responsibility.
Our best representatives will speak clearly and boldly about the changes we demand. To face conservative media, representatives should be well versed in conservative ideology. The message should be corporate responsibility. If corporations are going to enjoy the freedoms that legitimate citizens enjoy, they must also be held responsible for their impact on our society and the globe. The primary message cannot yet be that corporate citizenship is harmful to America. That is the conclusion, and we can bring America to that conclusion by chipping away at its flaws. The message of corporate responsibility will more easily resonate with middle and lower class conservatives. We have to illustrate that as Americans, we are responsible to our country, while corporations are responsible only to shareholders. Even in the wake of widespread fraud and economic damage, corporate executives face little or no punishment from the government. This is a luxury not afforded to low class criminals.
The role of government will be a key part of the Occupy message. Understand that a return to improved regulations and fairer tax structures will pave the road for solid and proven government programs down the road. Government can do great things for society when it's not being undercut from within. We could be leading the world in education by graduating competitive students from our public schools. We could ensure that the nation's best healthcare doesn't cripple the people it serves. We could strengthen the programs that care for the elderly and disabled when they cannot support themselves. We could have a government that succeeds where charity fails. But, none of this will be possible with the money vaccuum that has been created by regressive taxation and deregulation.
And that must be the focus of this great movement. Regressive taxation and deregulation have failed 99% of our country. What greater patriotism could there be than to promote the good of the 99%?
Quality post friend, I think we as a movement need to earn credibility in the "Mainstream Media" before we can implement most of what you say here, but you make many good points:
In my opinion, the heart of the issue is campaign finance reform. We need to have all political campaigns funded by the taxpayers from a separate fund. An amount would be designated say: 50 million dollars or 25 or whatever is a reasonable amount to actually travel and give speeches, and provide security for the candidates etc. And that NO OTHER MONEY be used, and that any contribution from ANY private donor big or small be made unlawful. AND REMOVE SPECIAL INTEREST LOBBIES from Washington. THEN we can begin to re-center American Democracy around the electoral process and the actual WILL of the people. Right now, politicians tell their "constituents" what they want to hear and make all of the promises they need to make, and then, newly elected (or re-elected) arrive in Washington and are immediately cornered and overwhelmed by all of the special interests that actually funded their campaign and dictate policy, and these politicians no longer connect "doing the will of the people" with "being a successful politician." Campaign financing and the lobbyists who OWN Washington, and every politician on both sides of the so-called “aisle” in their back pockets: THIS is the straw that is stirring this corrupt drink right now. Our leaders no longer need to act in the interests of the people they serve. Moreover, it is actually political suicide for them to do so. THAT, I feel, is a good "starting point" for one of this beautiful and exhilarating movement's central demands. REFORM CAMPAIGN FINANCE and ELIMINATE LOBBYISTS from Washington now...
Well said. Those two issues are critical to repairing the political system. However, I'm skeptical that the lobbyist system can be eliminated at this point. It's not impossible, but I think a more achievable near-term goal would be control. There should be strong limits on how lobbyists operate, though determining specifics to this approach will take some more thought. I agree that lobbyists seem to have essentially clotted the arteries that citizens would use to connect to their representatives. Just need to think it out a little.
Will do...thanks...Keep it movin' :)
Remember as President Obama was elected to office, there was a lot of discussion in Washington, from the right and the left, about reigning in the power of lobbyists. If there was ever a time that it could happen, it would have been then. It will be more challenging now with less focus on lobbyists in the media, but this should definitely be a facet of the OWS plan.
First, we must visualize a few possibilities. Is it possible to allow for the existence of lobbyists while controlling the amount of money they pour into Washington? Maybe there is a way to shift the balance of power within the lobbying industry without eliminating it entirely. After all, the concept of lobbying is not absolutely bad. Like government, lobbying has morphed into something which promotes infinite growth of Defense and neutering of Civil Liberties. Maybe OWS can become "the citizens' lobby for corporate responsibility and economic stability."
Good ideas here....help spread the word abut Campaign Finance Reform and regulation of the Special Interest lobbies!!!! We MUST start there....
Unfortunately, an endorsement of "Capitalism 2.0" is what the mainstream media is embracing and therefore, what Wall St. wants.
Notice all the BIG media outlets picked this up:

But for every article singing the praises of Capitalism 2.0 or of supposedly altruistic rich people with charitable foundations, you can also find 10 brutal indictments of them in the court of public opinion for what they are ACTUALLY doing. Which is, redistributing wealth to themselves.
Example: Gates Foundation
People like Bill Gates and Bono cause more problems than they solve by creating "charitable foundations" that then turn around and donate money to shell corporations that they have set up for themselves, or to corporations that they own shares in. It's all just good PR.

The Economic Revolution Requires a 25$ withdrawal from your BOA checking account on January first, 2012 -- pass this on!
The revolution has begun and will become obvious to all on JAN 1, 2012: If you want to see it, simply either close your Bank of America account, convince others to do this, and together we can collectively crash that bank -- as a demonstration of neo-democratic rule: that is, choosing to use the internet to collectively organize our powers and actions just as corporations and wealthy millionaires do - collectively. Pass this on and remind everyone you know to either close their account before January 2011, or to withdraw as much money as they can afford -- even as much as a 25 $ -- on January first: any removal of funds from that bank will contribute to our struggle against the 1%, against the deregulated greedy corporations, and the multi million and billionaires!
The resistance of the 85% is caused by the 15%; the 99% by the 1%.
