Forum Post: Boycott Facebook

Posted 13 years ago on Nov. 16, 2011, 7:50 p.m. EST by verdigris (14)

Protest and civil disobedience are two weapons in the arsenal of social change. Boycotting is another. As income disparity and lack of civil liberties are two issues being discussed frequently amongst #Occupiers, what better target for a boycott than Facebook? It is a cyber-sweatshop supporting a boy billionaire. It makes a profit by selling your personal information. What would become of it if people simply stopped using it?

Boycotting any business does work, but we have to remember that if a company starts losing money they end up laying people off. More people without jobs. A catch-22

[-] 1 points by verdigris (14) 13 years ago

True, but the same could be said of any action that potentially decreases revenues. Wage earners are at the mercy of employers.

Then you better take down all the occupy pages on facebook.

I agree 100%. I never have, nor ever will, have a Facebook page. The Feds, and the CIA in particular, use FB to spy on and compile info on millions of Americans. His second venture capital infusion ($12.5 million) came from the federal government. What does that tell you? Zuckerberg is indeed one of the 1% I am fighting against. To indiscriminately sell personal information without regards to privacy merely to line his pockets is, in my opinion, reprehensible. Boycott Facebook.

Hell No. We use the system to our advantage. Facebook is a great liberating tool.

Facebook and twitter... Great example of the sheeple of the United States. We're either watching an inordinate amount of television, talking about or watching sports, or using time in a generally frivolous manner. It's their time to use, but I think it represents the downfall of American literacy in reading and science.

Here we are on spaceship earth, an entire universe before us...and what are we doing with our free time? Nothing good. And It's not about the medium, it's the content...and it's been on a steady decline IMHO. But yes, I agree with the topic creator on boycotting Facebook. And TV... Let's boycott that too! That's not to say all programming is as pathetic as most, some is actually quite entertaining/educational. I stopped watching TV long ago, but I make sure to support the outlets that still produce quality programming(like NOVA).

Watching America's decline into mediocrity is almost painful(very almost). If we don't pick the ball back up, someone else will.

I agree. It is hard to take Occupy very seriously when they continue to use, and thereby financially support, a corporation that has so egregiously invaded people's privacy. People leaving Facebook in droves, would send a strong message to all corporations that people will no longer tolerate being disrespected.

so do you know who put this site up if that is your concern?

[-] 1 points by rickMoss (435) 13 years ago

This is important. But we must think big, not small or we will never accomplish what's most important to us. If go after the big fish all the other problem will be much easier to tame.

We need a better way to fight back. Protesting is courageous! But we have to do very big things to solve our very big problems. We need a new vision for America and a revolution to move it forward. We'll never get outside the box until we start thinking outside the box...

The cause of Facebook continuing to invade people's privacy, is people continuing to use Facebook despite its abysmal record and "invasion of privacy" policies.

[-] 1 points by rickMoss (435) 13 years ago

I agree, but we have bigger problems right now! People need jobs, healthcare and some need a place to live. Don't worry, we'll get to face book. Check out the Cyber World - http://www.osixs.org/V2_Meun_CyberWorld.aspx

"Now and then the workers are victorious, but only for a time. The real fruit of their battles lies, not in the immediate result, but in the ever expanding union of the workers. This union is furthered by the improved means of communication which are created by modern industry, and which place the workers of different localities in contact with one another" (authors' names withheld for obvious reasons). This passage, delivered in 1848, is finally delivering truth. I don't care who is currently profiting -- "cyber sweatshop"?

I agree. Our privacy already is invaded in so many ways. If our rights are slowly eroded they hope we won't notice. We keep giving a little until we wake up one day with nothing left.

[-] 1 points by nichole (525) 13 years ago

Knowing that our privacy is invaded regularly, I say, put it all out there and don't fear potential repercussions. I'd say a good majority of Americans are thought-criminals. Let's all share, let it be known, sing it from the rooftops -- prisons are already overflowing, what are they going to do with us? Have no fear.

[-] 1 points by verdigris (14) 13 years ago

Fire us, for one thing. Which in a Capitalist society can mean life or death.

[-] 1 points by nichole (525) 13 years ago

Crime and prison -- needs be met, are they not?

[-] 1 points by verdigris (14) 13 years ago

You are obviously willing to risk more than I am.

[-] 1 points by nichole (525) 13 years ago

When life itself begins to feel like prison, while abiding laws, following the rules, maintaining a good credit score, etc ... who would be fearful to risk going to another prison where your needs are met, you do not have to worry about paying rent, and you don't have to work?

[-] 1 points by verdigris (14) 13 years ago

Have you ever been in prison?

[-] 2 points by nichole (525) 13 years ago

One night, and I do not wish to ever return. I want to work.

[-] 1 points by verdigris (14) 13 years ago

That makes one of us on both counts. :)

[-] 1 points by Puzzlin (2898) 13 years ago

Wow. Have you read your history lately?

Don't get me wrong there's lots of good people, the majority are good certainly. But those bad apples can do incredible damage as history has clearly recorded.

Don't be so willing to put your head in that vise. There's many out there will gladly tighten that vise.

The innocence is kind of cute, but the real world has some sharp edges that in a New York moment can turn you around backwards.

Experience teaches us!

Some trolls around these parts let us know some secrets about themselves. Their very honest in their hate they reserve for us and try in so many words as possible to tear us as far down as they can. One, in another thread talked of sending a bullet our way if he could. Where do these words end and the actions take over?

I think we already have our answer. The world has answered. It's history.

[-] 1 points by nichole (525) 13 years ago

I've read my history and I know that nothing ever changes until brave folks bring themselves out of hiding and share with others their intellectual property. "Let us know secrets about themselves" ??? Who is "us", meaning who signs your paycheck, and why do you consider it a secret if someone merely disagrees with you?

[-] 1 points by Puzzlin (2898) 13 years ago

In Syria, their almost up 4000 now, brave souls sacrificed. You see we choose our battles, get out there when it counts. Be there. All in balance. Over exposing yourself just can get you hurt. John Lennon talked about this.

Nothing against you Nichole. I think your a honest and good person. From your posting I sense that. Just be careful with that and don't trust too much.

I say this because I care and it's all nice and cushy writing here in this thread. But outside is a world that many times shows a cruel indifference to us. We need you to stay with us but also we need to keep each other safe. We watch our backs and help each other.

Take care and good luck!!!

Look up Unthink. If anyone is iffy about boycotting Facebook for communication purposes, I'd suggest using Unthink and asking your friends to do the same. If there is ever an official boycott on Facebook planned, it's my fallback.

[-] 1 points by nichole (525) 13 years ago

No, utilize FB while knowing that the plug could be pulled at any time. It's never too early to begin discussing contingency plans.

[-] 2 points by verdigris (14) 13 years ago

I'm saying, let's pull it.
