Season 7 episode 6 "The Crack in the Code" spoilers
It's going to be a long few months between episodes for fans, as the next episode is introducing the newest nemesis, Christopher Pellant, a "genius hacktivist" who Stephen Nathan revealed to TVLine "will fundamentally change the direction of the show by the end of the season, even though he's not going to reappear that often." Part of that is that "Brennan will find herself in a situation she never thought she'd be in—and [Pellant] will be instrumental in that." The promos do show that there is some postulating that he could be smarter than Brennan, a fact that she doesn't like very much. Since he is a recurring villain, that means he's going to be around after Brennan gives birth, so perhaps whatever situation she's in somehow involves her protecting her baby girl and the family she's trying to keep. After all, Booth and Brennan are pretty settled in their relationship, despite a couple of disagreements. Could Pellant do something that could disrupt that?

When Pellant first gets on their radar in "The Crack in the Code" on Bones, Tamara Taylor explains, "he leaves riddles, and he dismembers bodies and leaves the parts all over D.C." That has been seen all over the promos, and it is quite disconcerting seeing just that bit. If that's what's kicking off his arc, what else is coming up with him during the rest of season 7?
Meanwhile, there is a happier storyline in this episode, and that involves Booth and Brennan finally finding a house they can agree on. Since the beginning of the season, they've been disagreeing about where they'll be living—Booth insists on diving the cost evenly, despite Brennan pointing out she's much richer than he is and could easily afford a place on her own for them—and Nathan has revealed, "We've been playing that [arc] through these first six [episodes]—where they can live, what they can afford—so we're setting up and giving them that life. We're going to go [into the break] knowing what the new threat is, and where they're go to be living." It'll be interesting to see just what they've decided on that they both agree on, and how different life will be for them once they officially live together, especially once the baby comes. Though that last part won't happen before the break, they're heading right for it, and hopefully the Fox drama ends in a place that doesn't exasperate fans too much while they wait for it to return in the spring, with a tentative date set for "the end of March," according to Nathan.
Sometimes we get to the point where there are so many sneak peeks out for a given episode that we feel like the episode has aired already! But alas, Bones’s six installment of Season 7 is no such case; we’ve got a whopping three clips to presage the episode, and yet we’re nowhere near satisfied! Oh well... we guess that means the promo people are doing their job right.
Our first clip sets the scene nicely, with Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) engaging in a moving-car edition of their perennial house-hunting argument. Booth wants a man-cave; Brennan wants an “anthropologist cave.” (Hey, we figure if “man cave” can get into the popular lexicon, what’s to stop “anthropologist cave” from doing the same?) Throw in “a perfect baby’s room,” and it’s no surprise that these two can’t find a house!
Bones season 7 continues this week with episode 6, "The Crack in the Code," and it's going to introduce the new villain and finally set Booth and Brennan up with a new house.
Three sneak peeks are now out from the episode, and they show what's coming up for the team on the latest case and for Booth and Brennan as they get ready for her to give birth.
In fact, the first clip (below) shows both parts of the episode. Booth and Brennan are on their way to the crime scene, and he makes sure people are working on keeping it from the press. This is not something they want getting out. Meanwhile, Brennan has the real estate section out, but they can't find anything that has everything they want: his man cave, her anthropologist's cave, and the perfect baby's room. Oh, and they also want at least an acre of land. They want all of this, and Booth has been insisting on splitting the cost even though Brennan does have enough money to buy them a place herself. There is a reason they're having trouble, but they're also running out of time. Brennan's due in six weeks, and their daughter is kicking hard. They're supposed to go into the break with it set where they'll be living as a family. Will they be able to find a place with everything they want, or will they have to compromise on some things?
The second Bones "The Crack in the Code" sneak peek (below) shows Booth and Brennan arriving at the crime scene. The killer left them a message in blood: "Where's the rest of me?" Brennan being Brennan (and you have to love her for it) points out that the killer must mean the body since "Lincoln seems intact." Hodgins estimates the time of death to be about two days. However, it's the next discovery from Brennan that's the most disturbing. Yes, this is one spine, but it's in the wrong order. The killer reassembled it that way on purpose. It's a message for them. But just what is this beyond creepy message trying to tell them? Is this their first clue to finding the rest of the body? It's a good thing they're keeping this out of the press. It has to be among the most disturbing crime scenes on this series.
The third sneak peek (below) reveals that the blood at the crime scene belonged to FBI agents, who are fortunately alive and well. The killer got the blood from an FBI blood drive, and that in itself is chilling. Who is this guy that he could get his hands on FBI blood drive blood? It's just one more thing that shows that it's not going to be so easy to catch this guy, and he knows it. He wants the FBI to acknowledge just how smart he is. With Brennan's due date approaching, it's no surprise that Booth's protectiveness is kicking in, but fortunately, he's not going to have to fight Brennan on staying out of the field. She knows she's not going to be in the field and is perfectly fine with staying in the field. Sweets' argument was sound, even though he didn't realize she was even listening to him.
Then it’s over to the crime scene, in a clip we’re at least somewhat. We’re kind of disappointed in all the characters who aren’t Brennan for not making any Ronald Reagan connections to “where’s the rest of me?” — after all, we’re well aware that Brennan has no cultural aptitude whatsoever, but come on! Booth? Anyone? Bueller?
Anyway, it turns out that the “dissected” spine is more complicated than it appeared at first blush — not only did the killer do some surgical wizardry in taking the spine out, but he also reattached the vertebrae in the wrong order. Could that be a clue? Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find that out.
The final clip features our beloved baby-faced Sweets (John Francis Daley) theorizing as to why Mr. Unnamed (at least to the squints) Killer would raid the FBI blood bank to write his grisly crimson message. And it looks like Brennan has decided to abandon such fun-filled activities as tornado-chasing while pregnant — she’s actually listening to Sweets (to Sweets’s astonishment!) and keeping to the lab as long as Baby Bones is kicking in the womb.
So there you have it: a pretty good glimpse of the first ten minutes or so of tomorrow’s Bones. Appetites whetted yet? If not, take a look at our spoiler round-ups and see if that doesn’t leave you salivating!
