Government is the problem!

I am the solution!

Let me govern your government so we can have less government while governing more.

Less is more! Deficits are wealth! Poverty is prosperity! Defense is industry! Iran is Contra!

Pretty much; the general sentiment I've found coming from party-line Republicans is that America should be able to bully its way around the world as it chooses, that the inability of their views to stand up to basic logic derives from flaws in basic logic rather than in their views, and that the US will reach its true potential when it returns to an 1880s-style Gilded Age in which a very small consortium of very wealthy men run the country and the rest of us are working for peanuts.

[-] 2 points by Tommiethenoncommie (211) 13 years ago

We are America. No logic errors. We are different.

[-] 2 points by RonnieStRaygun (74) from Sacramento, CA 13 years ago

Logic is confusing!

Ignorance is Strength.

[-] 1 points by Tommiethenoncommie (211) 13 years ago

Ignorance? Do you not understand America? We conform to no one.

[-] 1 points by ARod1993 (2420) 13 years ago

"We conform to no one" can have two very different meanings depending on the context of the statement. You're trying to bring out the first meaning; America has the final right of self-determination and anything or anyone that attempts to bully us into changing who we are is going to find out exactly why we have the Second Amendment. I have no problem with that; I don't believe that anybody has a right to tell us how we run our country.

The problem is that this is not the meaning I hear when I hear the phrase from people like you. What I hear from people like you is "There is no God but the Patriotic Everyman and I am his prophet" and that scares the shit out of me. Everyone and everything in this universe is subject to basic laws of logic and basic physical laws. I don't care who you are or how righteous you are: gravity still applies to you. Maxwell's equations still describe the behavior of your lightbulb. Your body is built of proteins no different than the rest of us.

While all of this may sound simple and elementary now, this also goes for things like evolution; your genome was derived from the same common ancestor as mine, and that ancestor was most likely a primitive primate. This also goes for logic. For a postulate to be valid it must be rooted in actual facts and reasonable deductions based on those facts. When applied in that context "We conform to no one" is not about protecting or defending our homeland or our rights; it's about deliberately attempting to short-circuit reason through an appeal to a mythical authority figure whom you have imbued with all attributes of virtue and wisdom. Newsflash: if the Patriotic Everyman believes that 2+2=5, then he is wrong. Belief does not and cannot replace reason in a functioning world.

Furthermore, the appeal to such a figure is also used as a rallying cry to lead people into things that they would never ordinarily involve themselves in. Executing a man for a crime we know he did not commit is wrong, but pressure to stop it must be rejected because America conforms to no one. Going to war in Iraq under totally false pretenses is wrong, but attempts to remind us of this must be brushed aside because America conforms to no one. Picking up a US citizen off the street, disappearing him for four full years, and probably torturing him is wrong, but attempts to tell us so are treason and sedition because America conforms to no one. Rugged individuals like the Patriotic Everyman conform to no one; so do bullies, criminals, and sociopaths. Which do we want America to be?

[-] 1 points by Tommiethenoncommie (211) 13 years ago

God is the ultimate authority. 2+2 can equal 5. Stephen Hawking proved that. Certain people and groups of certain countries want to destroy us, why not stop them first? Since you believe in evolution (as it is misconcieved), Darwin states it is nature to do so. You started off ok, but derailed a little. I applaud your thoroughness.

[-] 1 points by ARod1993 (2420) 13 years ago

Yes, 2+2 can equal 5 for sufficiently large values of 2. I've heard that joke before. As for Hawking, that's what happens when you try to apply the rules of finite arithmetic to operations involving infinities; it's more of a reminder to keep your rules straight than an actual proof. Also, you can get all kinds of fun proofs of that nature if you divide by zero (including that Glenn Beck is a carrot).

As far as evolution is concerned, most if not all of modern biology depends on the truth of evolution to work and so far it's working just fine. We have a ton of proof that the mechanisms for evolution are alive and well; why do you think it's so hard to get a vaccine for HIV? We also have proof that organic life forms can develop out of simple inorganic compounds (just Google the Miller-Urey experiment for proof of that). Also, until and unless there is concrete proof of God there is no reason for me to accept that he even exists, let alone that he can turn the universe on its ear on a whim.

Finally, Iraq had no WMDs and Jose Padilla could have been dealt with in federal court and possibly tossed in ADX Florence or Terre Haute rather than simply made to disappear, and there is all kinds of evidence that torture is actually a remarkably inefficient way to obtain information from people.

I'm not here to debate religion and science. They can work together fine. I do not deny evolution. Creationism is chronologically accurate. As for the certain countries, they try to be isolated and do not wish to assimilate. They gotta give a little. A tyrannical theocracy-like state doesn't work in such a diverse world.

[-] 1 points by ThisIsNotCapitalism (156) from Redmond, WA 13 years ago

I'm religious myself, but why do 30% of these conversations turn in to a religious debate? The governance of our country, so long as it's not oppressive, has little to do with religion. If we want we can make that decision individually at the poll booth. Clearly the 99% represents a great number of people from all walks of life. Geez.

[-] 1 points by ARod1993 (2420) 13 years ago

Even though I personally am not religious, I don't care what other people believe so long as it doesn't preclude common sense. I have a number of friends who are devoutly Christian and another group of friends that are equally devout atheists, and I get along with both groups quite well. If you're willing to listen to reason then I have no reason not to trust you and I am more than willing to listen to and respect what you have to say. My comment to Tommie about God had to do with the fact that evolution is pretty much an undisputed fact; there's so much correct and valuable science that relies on evolution being right that if you want me to take creationism (or its proponents) seriously you're going to have a LOT of explaining to do. Hell, if you want you can believe that God created the world; I don't care, just as long as you accept that He used evolution as a vehicle to create it. Just don't try to sell me on young-Earth anti-evolution crap and then expect me to listen to you.

[-] 1 points by ThisIsNotCapitalism (156) from Redmond, WA 13 years ago

I actually agree with you 100%. What's most important is fostering an environment of freedom for everyone.

Many countries want to destroy US because US is destroying many other countries. If you want to stop them first, the best method is to bring your armies home and stop attacking the rest of the world.

[-] 1 points by Tommiethenoncommie (211) 13 years ago

We interfere to do the right thing and because we can. We broke the mold and surpassed every other country in a fraction of the time they existed. The main reason it is the Middle East right now is because they want to wipe out an entire race of people, the Jews.

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 13 years ago

Oh, "them". I think the problem is you lack general education, basic logic, and knowledge of history.

For one, when you say "We interfere to do the right thing and because we can." you make two logical mistakes. Your assumption that you interfere to do the right thing is extremely naïve. It shows you don't understand the history of US foreign affairs and wars, and why you are in Iraq. When you say you make wars just because you can, it's an extremely lame argument at best. Do you punch your neighbor's nose just because you can?

Finally, it seems you don't have any knowledge of the histories of Israel and Palestine. Israel has been growing year after year since its creation. The country coming off the map is Palestine, which has been shrinking year after year since the creation of Israel. As for the Jews, 77% of the population in Palestine is Jewish, so some Jews get wiped out whenever Israel attacks Palestine, or the other way around. You really should read some books, you might start to understand why US is friends with Israel in the first place. Hint: It gives them a strong foothold in the middle east which is a strategic land because of its oil reserves.

[-] 1 points by Tommiethenoncommie (211) 13 years ago

I know a hell of a lot more than you think. We drew the lines for Israel after WWII so we have an obligation to protect it. There will be no peace in the Middle East without another Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Falling into place with "the land will be destroyed by water no more, but by fire."

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 13 years ago

So what are you waiting for? Why don't you drop a few nuclear bombs for the good of us all?

[-] 1 points by Tommiethenoncommie (211) 13 years ago

Metaphorically, I do. Every day; with my knowledge and wisdom of things people fail to see or understand. As for reality, a strong jolt could be good. Proven multiple times.

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 13 years ago

You're a cute funny little cowboy.

[-] 1 points by Tommiethenoncommie (211) 13 years ago

so you'd just let them go ahead and do it?

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 13 years ago

Who's them, and what's it?

[-] 1 points by Tommiethenoncommie (211) 13 years ago

Fundamentalists who seek to wipe out the Jews and take Israel off the map.

[-] 1 points by Tommiethenoncommie (211) 13 years ago

Well then, let's see!

[-] 0 points by Thrasymaque (-2138) 13 years ago

Sorry, I edited my last comment. 2 + 2 can equal 5. I just depends on the numbering system you use. Learn about mathematical bases and figure it out for yourself. Here's a clue: in base 3, 2 + 2 = 11.

Last I checked Obama, a democrat, has started several other "military exercises" in the middle east WITHOUT any congressional approvals. Obama (a democrat) has tarnished the image of the US and we are less respected now than we have been in a very long time. Nancy Pelosi (a democrat) owns a vinyard and is know to pay low wage illegal aliens to work there. Jon Bon Jovi (a registered democrat) voted to shut down the Arena football league (New Jersey General owner) because he was not making any money. There is a huge list of democrats who do the same things you only blame on the republicans. be honest.
