If fossil fuel really wanted to do something responsible? They could set-up collection stations for naturally occurring methane in places like bubbling methane lakes as well as in dumps where materials dumped are decomposing and releasing methane. But working ( seriously ) to switch their operations to clean tech power generation.

The problem of methane capture seems to be in removing other elements from the gas - not in the capture of the gas itself. So my reasoning should still stand. Instead of letting this methane escape into the atmosphere - and instead of fracking up our geology releasing gas into the ground water - why not just capture the already freely occurring gas? That has got to be a cheaper operation than fracking.

Excerpt:

But methane is a shy molecule, one that doesn't interact much with its surroundings, unlike its more gregarious companions like carbon dioxide. Creating a substance that can coax methane out of a gas stream while letting everything else go by is tricky, so researchers are using computer simulations to test thousands of materials to come up with a few that could do the job.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

The capture science is still in it's infancy.

http://www.nature.com/ncomms/journal/v4/n4/full/ncomms2697.html

So, my next question is......what the hell is zeolite?

https://www.google.com/search?q=zeolites&client=firefox-beta&hs=idq&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=jfKoUf7BHtK0qAHJ7ICYDQ&ved=0CEUQsAQ&biw=1472&bih=758

WHOA! It looks like a lot of different stuff, useful for it's lattice structure.

Here's what it is.

"Zeolites are microporous crystalline solids with well-defined structures. Generally they contain silicon, aluminium and oxygen in their framework and cations, water and/or other molecules wthin their pores. Many occur naturally as minerals, and are extensively mined in many parts of the world. Others are synthetic, and are made commercially for specific uses, or produced by research scientists trying to understand more about their chemistry. "

http://www.bza.org/zeolites.html

Looks very useful, but much beyond that and you have to start paying for the papers..................................:)

Cutting edge, and still very, very, owned.

Still, covering the bottom of an entire lake, or tundra, looks complicated...............:)

Speaking of tundra, did you see they dug a mammoth up from the thawing tundra the other day.....and it actually bled?

Maybe someday.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Collection of methane/gas could be done with a cover that floats on the body of water - or sits on the ice where a hole has been cut - the cover collects the out-gassing methane for use = placement in collection pressure bottles/containers. This cover could also be used in collecting sewer gas/methane as well as placed over landfills as well as used to place decomposing plant matter inside of. The main thing being the concentration of gas being produced and then placing an open sided container over it to concentrate the collection. Now tundra farming for gas may not be very feasible - but an out-gassing lake or landfill or sewer? Or compost site?

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Any land fill or even compost pile would be fair game.

So far the zeolites work best with higher (60%) concentrations of the gas.

It didn't say whether they work in aqueous environments though.

it sounds promising though.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

California put into operation one of those power plants that recycles sewer gas to run it.

[-] 1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

That kind of thing is GREAT.

Believe it, or not, Detroit is supposed to be getting a new sludge treatment system, worth close to a billion dollars.

I just found out about it, so I don't know if includes such a capture system, but I hope it does.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

More good news green energy implementation in Minnesota was saved from attack for budget cuts - attacks by the state's corp(se)oRATists - "surprise" majority of whom seem to be calling themselves republicans - hhmmm state and fed showing a consistent parallel in that regard.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

I read that.

Every victory, is a good one. Plus you get to lose Bachmann.

I wonder if your local teabagger's will put in a serious run for her seat?

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Every step forward is good - forward being clean healthy sanity.

Bichman? Yeah that makes a person feel good - just hope she don't change her mind. The corp(se)oRATists will no doubt be scrambling frantically for a replacement.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

I'll miss the comedy, but not the absurdity of her.

Such craziness, should never have such a loud microphone.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Unless that microphone comes with a spotlight to really illuminate the crazy - prior to it reaching any office or other position of power or influence.

This has been one of my biggest fears. Once the oceans warm enough to release the methane on the ocean floor there is nothing we can do.

[-] 0 points by Stormcrow2 (-184) 11 years ago

What about all the methane gas being released by decomposition in the forrests? I guess we need to do something about that too, don't we?

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Oceans and tundra too.

All that rotting plant matter in Siberia.

This is allegedly natural, so you can add in what we add to.

[-] 2 points by NVPHIL (664) 11 years ago

An avalanche is natural too but man can start one with dynamite. Pollution is the dynamite setting off a climate avalanche.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

And then there's that comment up at the top, that contains almost every corporate talking point in one post.

[-] 2 points by NVPHIL (664) 11 years ago

I suspect as long as money can be made off of pollution we will get people like that. I blame the scientific illiteracy of the populous for our problems.

[-] 2 points by NVPHIL (664) 11 years ago

We can't forgot reps trying to modify the basis of scientific grants. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/2013/04/30/lamar-smith-science-peer-review_n_3189107.html

We need to find a way to sever science from politics. O better yet, vote in scientists to congress so at least when they need to make changes they will be informed changes.

[-] -1 points by elation (-32) from New York, NY 11 years ago

I blame you for failing 3rd grade biology.

[-] -1 points by elation (-32) from New York, NY 11 years ago

"Caused by the decomposition of organic matter—like plants, animals, and microbes—the extremely flammable gas begins to surge up in the warmer months as it floats ever closer to the surface."

How old is the earth, you'd think it'd be a furnace by now with all that decomposed organic matter throughout millions of years if methane was actually heating up the earth. Especially since is "20 times more dangerous than co2"

Wake up and smell the bs.. lake farts threaten planet earth. I'll go with the poster at the comment section.

"This methane must be stopped, try taxing the water more that should stop the greenhouse gass from escaping."

Natural processes of the earth doesn't cause it to spontaneously combust.. idiots.. It's a carbon based planet co2 is what plants breathe and convert to oxygen.. we need co2 like we need plants, it's pretty lucky that most animals exhale co2 so that plants have something to breathe.

It's a beautiful symbiotic relationship that either increases or decreases the oxygen concentration and plant life. Both requiring eachother and sustaining eachother.

And decomposed carbon based organisms produce methane for millions of years without any problems for our climate.. and you are told that both of them are causing the planet to spontaneously combust.. AND YOU BELIEVE IT!? Not only do you believe it, some even call for the arrest of sceptics.. the green gestapo i call them.

must... tax... more.. and shut down competition and the energy grid of near clean coal plants so the infrastructure goes to shit and the world becomes deindustrialized.. Whilst allowing polluting coal plants in china..

It makes as little sense as what angelina jolie did recently, got both her tits removed cause there was a chance she could get cancer. Whilst ignoring the cancer cure that is cannabis..

but the doctor tells you so maybe you should go have your testies removed and cower in fear of lake farts all day long.

[-] 2 points by NVPHIL (664) 11 years ago

The methane has been locked in a solid state for millions of years. What worries people is that we will increase the ocean temp enough that the methane becomes gas and escapes into the atmosphere. If that happens we don't have any wayof reversing the process.

[-] 1 points by redandbluestripedpill (333) 11 years ago

Best rant of the year:-)

[-] 0 points by Stormcrow2 (-184) 11 years ago

Apparently this happens in other areas of the globe - I believe there was a story written about it in relation to the Bermuda Triangle where a ship was lost and it was determined that "methane gas bubbles" coming up from the ocean floor and it just so happened the ship couldn't float and sank when surrounded by these gas bubbles.

So, this story is nothing new and I am sure there are lots of other areas on the ocean floor where this is happening -

Maybe we can put restrictions on "nature" to stop this shit from happening.

[-] 0 points by elation (-32) from New York, NY 11 years ago

Haha.. i have to tell you that's the most hilarious explanation of the bermuda triangle i have heard yet. Thank you for that injection of comedy.

I guess the methane bubbles took down the airplanes too.

Look into devils triangle near japan, it's even worse. I doubt it has much to do with methane bubbles.. But go ahead and quarantine that area and send down submersibles let's see what they find. Good luck!

[-] -1 points by elation (-32) from New York, NY 11 years ago

I'll give you a little tip, an ancient perhaps abandoned underwater ET base with automatic defences taking down security threats (ships/airplanes) that have been there for thousands of years, has more likelyhood than methane gass for taking down airplanes over the bermuda triangle.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Those are natural.

Consider what we are adding to it.

They won't let photographers anywhere near the ponds they store their waste in by the tar sands.

You get the occasional telephoto fly over.

[-] -2 points by elation (-32) from New York, NY 11 years ago

Don't fart guys, they think you're killing the planet.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

In your case?

They're fully contained in your skull cavity............................:)

I like beans.....I fart.................Get used to it.

I'm not warming the tundra.........Global Warming is.

[-] 0 points by JackPulliam3rd (205) 11 years ago

So is the US automobile industry

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Huh?

I hope that wasn't supposed to make sense.

It didn't.

[-] -1 points by JackPulliam3rd (205) 11 years ago

The US automobile industry increases Global Warming, which is warming the tundra. Better?

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Idiots who constantly demanded, and got no and or lowered regulation did that.

And the citizens that said........duh.........OK.

I wanted emission and MPG standards way back in the 60s.

For ALL cars and ALL industries.

For ALL their emissions.

How about you?

[-] -1 points by JackPulliam3rd (205) 11 years ago

Of course I want that. I've also not owned a car in decades. Some of us want, some talk, some do the right thing. Some, like the automobile industry, kill the planet.

How about you? Want to compare carbon footprints?

[-] 1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

I'm sure you will claim you stand on your head in a hole in the ground and eat nothing but oak leaves,

So no.

Not at this time.

I have obligations that limit my abilities.

[-] -2 points by CoryHeart (-2) 11 years ago

You mean you can't debate anything serious, so you'll run away to attack other users with more gratuitous insults and logical fallacies.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Mr. Puppet??

Which arm of the puppetpus are you?

I meant exactly what I said.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I am unable to claim the smallest footprint I'm capable of.

When I recently didn't have those obligations, the electric bill for my house was around $20 a month.

Today, I get around a months worth of driving in my "04' Ranger's full tank of gas.

That's not too bad.

Now about those oak leaves?

How do they taste?

[-] -1 points by JaniceMilano (-5) 11 years ago

Shooz always has problems understanding basic English. It's good that you laid it all out for him. I try to keep it easy with adjectives also.

[-] -2 points by elation (-32) from New York, NY 11 years ago

Yeah because an abject culture of patting eachothers back if you know them, even if they're completely wrong in what they're doing is the way of the future.

[-] -3 points by elation (-32) from New York, NY 11 years ago

I'll tell you what's humanitys fault, the sheer stupidity of people like you.

[-] -2 points by elation (-32) from New York, NY 11 years ago

lol the infantile mentality of these uber posters with 20k twinkles is quite tragic.

Let's talk about the sun, solar cycles and our movement through the galaxy have any effect perchance?

You do know the climate is constantly changing, that's why we have highs and lows.

Makes me wish we had the ability at hand to terraform some planet in the vicinity of our solar system and put you guys on it so you guys can sacrifice your own children to secure yourself from natural processes of the planet.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Two things, Brainscan: 1. I'm one of a kind. 2. The only two people I've spoken to today are you and shooz.

You need to let go of this sock puppet paranoia thing you have going on.

[-] 0 points by CarlosSanchezRamirez (-2) 11 years ago

He just likes to attack every poster here. It's easier than formulating proper arguments and debating like an adult. Calling people 'ejaculation' should get you banned here. It soils the forum and makes all occupiers look infantile. I'm not sure how he thinks this helps our cause.

[-] 1 points by JaniceMilano (-5) 11 years ago

lol the infantile mentality of these uber posters with 20k twinkles is quite tragic.

Quite tragic indeed. So tragic that it does not make me laugh in the least. These are the people who have invested the most time on this forum. They give the biggest impression to the people who read this place. A real Occupy tragedy. They should have been banned long ago. They belong in the sandbox with other kindergarteners, not here.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

In reference to what??

I didn't make your grade school comment about farts. You did.

I didn't make any grade school comments about global weather either. You did.

[-] -2 points by JaniceMilano (-5) 11 years ago

You have the attitude of a kindergartener in almost everyone of your posts. It's like you're here to try to one-up everyone. You're not interested in serious debates like most adults are. You like to attack gratuitously with lame name calling, rhetorical questions, and other infantile tactics.

For example: http://occupywallst.org/forum/beautiful-bubbles-of-methane/#comment-975826

[-] 1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Hi Mr. Puppet........................:)

How are you this fine day, Mr. Puppet?

Did you want to debate Global Warming, Mr. Puppet?

You really shouldn't.

The debate is long over.

[-] -1 points by elation (-32) from New York, NY 11 years ago

Yeah, whoever you are "Mr. Gore" i really don't want to meet you, as far as way as possible thank you very much. You do not speak for me whatsoever.

Taking care of nature is very important. Shutting down industry on an arbitrary basis without a decent replacement causing all kinds of problems because of people like yourself, nah not a good thing.

How about you attack the gmo, and the weather modification and the publicly admitted chemtrail/geoengineering shit going on, cancer rates going up because of chemicals and other stuff in the food and water being contaminated especially in the US. You know actual issues rather than focus on natural processes such as co2 and methane which are regular processes of the planet.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Which arm of the puppetpus am I talking to???

Who admitted to chemtrails???

Alex Jones?

WTF are you even responding to?

[-] -1 points by JaniceMilano (-5) 11 years ago

You never debate, you are incapable of it. The only thing you do is attack and insult others with logical fallacies. The only exception is with the other trolls here, DKAtoday and GF. With them you drop on all fours and do whatever it takes to please them. You're the little Robin of the bunch. DKAtoday is your Batman.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Debate what Ms. Puppet?

Indeed, you must realize that your entire post consists of logical fallacies.

I guess you just don't know how hard it is for a human to debate puppets.

Shame about that.

Your personal attacks has nothing to do with the article.

Tell you what, when these little gophers start debating what i am saying instead of taking pot shots, then i'll perhaps take them seriously.

Yes, I agree.

There's a lot of censorship going on on this forum that you clearly know nothing about.

I get banned everyday. My thread about 'right wing shills' was created under the name of dormund, then I switched to another user, then again to Gaudi, then to Michael Brown, and now to JaniceMilano, all within a few hours. So yes, I know about censorship here.

The site protects the village idiots, not those with proper debating skills.
