I'm a 27 year old Canadian interested in the OWS movement because my own research into the matter does show a very unfair distribution of wealth in this country and an even worse situation in the US. However I have been banned from OWS chat because I said the following things:
If Oakland protesters threw rocks the police had a responsibility to disperse the crowd.
Isn't it the case that living on public land without permission or rent is illegal and if so, why does OWS do it?
I am a vegan, atheist, low income earner with 2 kids. I voted for the NDP which is the more socialist party of Canada. Did I deserve to be booted? Why? Am I not welcome in a movement if I don't agree with certain aspects of it and voice those opinions?
Some of the moderators are a little overly eager to boot. Don't worry to much about it. I don't use the chats anymore because there is just too much of a power struggle.
More than half of these comments are trolls.
It's getting hard to discuss anything here. But I'm not giving up.
"If Oakland protesters threw rocks the police had a responsibility to disperse the crowd."
But if someone provokes you with tear gas, do you have the right to throw rocks at that person?
Isn't it the case that living on public land without permission or rent is illegal and if so, why does OWS do it?
Yes that is illegal. So why can land be hoarded for speculation without paying rent? There are people who own hundreds of thousands of acres of "public land" that don't pay a single tax on it and don't use it for the public. And no my logic isn't off and I'm not crazy, this really does sound ridiculous.
So why does OWS do it? Well whether you like it or not people have been practicing this legal activity for eight thousands years. OWS just wants a tiny sliver back.
Apparently not. They just removed a thread of mine from this forum, that had over 190 responses. Literally moments ago. Apparently, dealing with questions is not their strong suit.
Civil disobedience means breaking the law. Obeying the law never got anyone who wanted to change things anywhere. You best be prepared to make waves or you SHOULD go home and leave the democracy to the grown ups. Feel free to write a very lawful letter to someone and hope they listen. I'm sure that'll change things.
As for the bannings, it is well known that the mods hate free speech and differing viewpoints, and they recently codified their hatred into forum rules and posted them at the top of the forum.
You are correct. I saw the Greek riots first hand. At least those guys came prepared for what was going to happen.
I think what might have happened is an overload of trolls, which might cause an overload of banning.
Basically, this is not the site to be at. It's dangerous. It's unpredictable. Not accountable.
Try themultitude.org, occupyr.org, or occupytogether.org
If you want to be part of the party, you have to think like the party. It's not because you're an atheist that what you have to say is automagically logical. Read up on OWS and start thinking like them. Think like them, be like them, act like them, then you'll have a place at the table.
