Wealth is the king that rules America. But unlike a British king, who is a single person, Americans, though royalists, are more democratic. They mince the body of their king into trillions of pieces called money and play a game called Assemble the King. Now, while the richest person in America possesses more pieces of the king than any other single person, compared to all the pieces of the king in circulation among the entire population, the richest American is a tiny fragment of a king with little power. It’s a different story, however, with the top three hundred thousand richest Americans. They possess more pieces of the king’s body than all the rest of the population put together. When this three hundred thousand agree to act in concert--and the American Constitution, so to speak, greases the rails of agreement--a miracle occurs: the pieces of the king’s body assemble into a single monarch with the result that the king of America comes alive and talks. The body of this king is perfect except for two things: he lacks ears. For the king’s ears are divided among the remaining three hundred million Americans. Otherwise his subjects couldn’t hear and hearken to his decrees. Unfortunately, when his decrees go awry, since the king is without ears he cannot hear the complaints of his subjects however loudly they protest. And even if he could hear them, the king is certain that if placed in the scales of a balance, he would far outweigh his ears.
