The Occupy Main and General Council has called all protestors to be recalled and go back to their homes until a new order can be established called "the Second Deal" which was passed by the General Assembly yesterday. This will establish a new order of 100 members who will go to Washington (they were invited by Obama) to talk to congress and give the demands the OWS wants. We have followed the forum and they have come up with 124 demands that include evicting many rich people who run the country. Leave now and wait on the forum for about 3 days.
I agree with this 100%. Since Bloomberg raided the park on the 15th, the movement seems to have shifted to be more about physically occupying a space than about the message we are trying to send to the world. In this soundbite http://soundcloud.com/megrobertson/announcement-on-new-ows-effort at minute 1:45 you can hear a proclamation that the occupiers are going to take Duarte Square. Why? The connections have been made. The work can be done as it is already set up to be done. The meetings can still happen, and I believe, if we take our work home, we are much more a force to be reckoned with - we are reasonable, sensible people fighting for the rights of all. If these "occupations" continue, we will be painted as aggressive anarchists whose only purpose is to take what doesn't belong to us. The true message(s) will be lost behind the image that this will allow big corporations to make of us. It's time. Let's walk away and work quietly and efficiently behind the scenes. Let's put our energy toward the work that matters, not some symbolic act of "taking."
Finally we are done. The site is shutting down in a few days.
The Occupy space will be moved.
Please what are the 124 demands? I think the demands should be posted in this thread (yes all 124!). I think the demand to 'evict' rich people is just plainly silly. I mean really which 'rich people' do you have in mind? Evicting the wealthy from the country means losing their tax money too which is needed. You should focus on evicting them directly from the political process not the country.
The problem is not the wealthy, the problem is deregulation and lobbyists and the revolving door between Washington and the financial sector. The problem is election financing through special interest groups not random rich people.
Well stated donnagallo! I agree that it's time to take our work home. Now comes the hard part...educating ourselves as to who is doing what..and then forming groups of interested people to work together to come up with sensible intelligent solutions.
