Forum Post: Aren't 99% of Westerners the world 1%?

It occurs to me that, on a global scale, just about anyone living in the US qualifies as the 1%. According to world standards, the fact that we have opportunity to vote for our leaders, borrow money for education to be whatever we want, move anywhere in the country to work, and do whatever we wish in our free time (we have free time!) makes us the world 1%. As a global 1%er, is tenting about and whining putting the astounding opportunities we have to good use, or simply squandering something a staggeringly high percentage of the world dreams about when they're not working 20 hour days for food? My opinion: I will be grateful for the opportunity afforded me, make my living wisely, care for my neighbors, and if someone else has more, I won't let envy ruin my focus...

Well, honestly, I'm trying to "get" OWS, and I just can't. I'm supposed to be the 99% by my economic and political standing, but I have nothing in common with the folks on the news (or the Wall Street barons for that matter). I am largely unaffected by the government, nor do I care how much money you or anyone else makes... I can't complain. Just trying to figure out why others are so worked up.

Wow, seems as if you have a mile-long smile, which begs the question: what are you doing here? So off to the land of Oz and may your optimism radiant the world over.

It's relative.
