"...to develop what is described as an "online persona management service" that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world.

The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives.

The discovery that the US military is developing false online personalities – known to users of social media as "sock puppets" – could also encourage other governments, private companies and non-government organisations to do the same...." read more--- http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/mar/17/us-spy-operation-social-networks

US service men and women! Are you kidding? have you ever been in the service? Thats funny. Remember that the US military answers directly to President Obama, and I seriously doubt there would be a "sock puppet" program under his command. Are there "sock puppets"? Sure, but I'd say a lot of them are just people trying to increase their own voice. I'll be honest... I have another profile on this site only because I forgot the password and it was just as easy to make a new profile. My old one is "Atomsmasher"

I doubt they're regular GI joes, but it would be classic homeland security crowd control. who knows, maybe it is another gov. China banned the Occupy as a search term. Could be anything not fond of freedom for the average person.

The article says Middle East and Central Asia. It also says not US web sites. Being a member of the military, I hope nothing like that is happening. Troll is a troll though.

when have our spies not spied on Americans? There no supposed to, but how else are they gonna protect us lol

I was talking about the trolling. I'm sure the CIA has profiled everyone here. The military mostly spies on military members and follows the graph from there. Call it reverse social engineering ;)

Wow, you think?

[-] 1 points by skinny (44) 13 years ago

Study how they make some out of hand statement and move on. they're just here to wait people's time and make it seem like people are against this. They are basically bots, or as the article says puppets.

waste I mean, time lol

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

They get paid to waste time - taxpayer dollars I might add.

Sure and they should be sad about the rewards, switch sides ; ) I mean democracy is the American side.

Company is always better then being in an intellectual bunker. Come in from the cold! Isolation breeds fascism : )

I figured this was the case within my first 5 minutes on this forum. Thankfully their logic is usually flawed and transparent. My best tactic is to ignore their content and call out the intentions. That usually shuts them up or forces an equally ridiculous and transparent response. I'm thinking of saving some of these for a greatest hits :)

I actually think they are helping in a way, it is like they don't understand the internet

The files are inside the computer!!!! :) I completely agree and they all seem to share common themes. It's like they walk in for their shift and the commander goes "ok boys, the theme today is (Canada, Socialism, Vandalism, hippies, etc)". And off they go. What is worrisome is that today's theme seems to be threats of violence....

[-] 1 points by skinny (44) 13 years ago

ah, violence! the old stand by threat of the military industrial media complex, i.e. GE and the like.
