Forum Post: And... what if raised hands become uncountable?

Hello people...

I've just saw The Alyona Show emission in which she talks with three occupiers and one thing that left me thinking was the way decisions are made, particularly in Wall Street.

I do believe in real democracy and GA's may have been working so far, but I think that, as the number of people involved grows, GA's will become impractical.

So what about creating an on-line voting system? Such a system would allow for gathering ideas and maintain the true democratic decision making process when hands raised become uncountable.

The constitution and even efficient business models. The most efficient organizations use this framework to gain feedback and develop business strategies. If we used this framework to create our own businesses and manufacture our own products, we can make the current government gradually obsolete.

This is a good thing to consider. If we break up into smaller groups with each one having a representative to report votes it will be much easier.

Good Idea, you base that off the Constitution? Cause that's how it's supposed to work. But they've been bought. Generations of Americans have allowed it to go on for far too long.

How do you prevent fraud in this area?

I'm not sure if your comment refers to the on-line voting system. In this reply I'm assuming it does:

This is a good question, so I asked myself:

q1. Who would want to commit fraud in this context?.

q2. How would fraud be commited on an on-line voting system?.

Considering that the point is to achieve true participative democracy I would say:

a1. Basically any person, really motivated to gain approval or disapproval on a given proposal.

a2. The only way to commit fraud in the context of an open votatoin would be by voting more than once.

Now lets say that someone proposes to ban musical instruments from the occupation site. Of course, musicians and some other people will be against this and residents and some other people will be in favor. So the decistion is elevated to the community for votation.

If everybody have the right to vote as many times as they want, and if partial results are instantly available as votes come in, the final result will be given by how many people are voting and how interested these people are on that particular matter. So it doesn't matter if anybody tries to vote more than once, because that is actually allowed and, if having or not having drums on place is that important to someone, well, their opinion must be heard. Nevertheless, some kind of filter to limit the amount of votes from the same place within a given period of time could be implemented; which would force those who want to place too many votes to either wait to the next day, or physically move to another computer.

I purposely didn't talk about people trying to hack into the system and somehow take the voting down; and the reasons are:

  1. Corporations are not afraid of us

  2. Anonymous is on our side, so we don't have to worry about them... they might even help on this :)

  3. There is still time to implement proper security measures as they start to become important.

Of course there are alternatives, such as creating a list of registered voters. This of course would introduce some other items to the discussion about fraud prevention.
