English aristocrats/royalty established businesses and accumulated wealth and property in America before the Revolution in 1776. Many of them stood with the king and aristocracy as Tory traitors to our revolt. "The United States delegation at the Treaty of Paris included John Jay, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin" [see Wikipedia "Treaty of Paris 1783"] and others. By the agreement, the principal owners/Tories of America were allowed to keep the wealth they'd gained under British domination.
In the 1830s, when Britain and Mexico outlawed slavery, the spiritual and literal heirs of the Tory traitors fought for the "freedom to own slaves, here and in Texas. Later, they formed the confederacy and their treachery became open again, except where they maintained a low profile in the North. At the time of the American Civil War, the fledgling Republican Party opposed the Tories who still owned much of America.
Today the Republicans and most of the Democrats are the tools of the neo-aristocracy of Tory Traitors: the owners of our country. There's a large plurality of us who support the propertied class of banksters, corporate [stock] owners, executives and billionaires, because the latter sublimate appeals to racism, xenophobia, misogyny and christo-fascist Theocracy.
This is how we got here and had our democratic republic conquered from within by British Aristocracy that never fired a shot or said an unkind word about the America they vanquished.
What are we going to do about it?

"What are we going to do about it?" In deed!
