A meritocracy would work better. If you changed our system to a direct democracy it would fail because the majority of the people want lots of benefits and don't want to pay the taxes to support those benefits.

Explain how to tweak the system into a meritocracy.

[-] 1 points by nickhowdy (1104) 13 years ago

Ok then...

[-] 1 points by nickhowdy (1104) 13 years ago

You would have the three houses. "The Populace" "The Senate "The Congress"

[-] 1 points by nickhowdy (1104) 13 years ago

Yes but all three houses have to vote by real majority for anything...to pass a law all three must be in agreement.

after 3 weeks of intense discussions, i came to this conclusion: http://occupywallst.org/forum/i-demand-informed-direct-democracy-online-whos-wit/#comment-281189

Now I am simply making it known to everyone that we ALREADY HAVE a direct democracy online, go vote, nothing is stopping us, it is our right, we do not need permission, the facilities already exist, they will grow as the voters grow in number till the whole country is voting.

You're welcome to take this scrap of an idea and run with it...I like it simply because it doesn't burn the house down.

[-] 1 points by nickhowdy (1104) 13 years ago

Trying to keep it simple..you still have the other houses..

[-] 1 points by nickhowdy (1104) 13 years ago

I'm giving them the structure...of what it could be like..It is a PPT presentation.

[-] 1 points by alfi (469) 13 years ago

Yes, I understand, I don't care how it happens, as long as people are given the power to overturn laws, make their own, and vote for or against laws. The "how" is not important, so long as the public has control over what our gov does, and control of the rules of fairness in the market place. You present a very well thought out way to do it. Here's another: http://openassembly.org After about 1 week of pushing as hard as I could to get Democracy noticed on the ground in OWS, someone posted this link, I believe it was newly created, but it was based on a 2-year old project on reddit.com

[-] 1 points by nickhowdy (1104) 13 years ago

alfi, it's just something I came up with quickly..So this gives people the power to overturn our bought off political system.

[-] 1 points by alfi (469) 13 years ago

me too, the idea I had was very basic and simplistic: Most people I meet these days know things like the FED is a private bank that prints our money, and Monsanto is the largest OWNERS of GMO DNA copyrights on seeds, they own over 65% of the worlds grain seeds, that the Patriot Act allows our gov to spy on it's own people for purposes of national security, and many many other really obvious signs of the world-wide corruption that is at the top level of power.

They know all these things from the internet, they certainly didn't see it on TV. So I thought, hmmm, the internet, instant access to free open source information, and those websites that people give thumbs up thumbs down on stuff... = Direct Electronic Voting by the people and for the people!

Then I wrote the demand, and 3 weeks later, here we are. After I posted the idea, i found hundreds of other people and other blogs and comments all dated in the past month that had the same idea as me! It was a very emotional 1st week for me. I found a quote, i don't know who said it,: "You cannot stop an idea who's time has come."

[-] 1 points by nickhowdy (1104) 13 years ago

The idea is good and isn't new..Gerald Celente has been pushing this..http://directdemocracynow.org/

Join up.

[-] 1 points by alfi (469) 13 years ago

Yes, I found that page about 1 day after I posted this demand thing. I have signed up for Celente's blog and sent him a personal request that the next time he goes to the park, to take this message with him and tell the people on the ground and see if they agree, I think they would, since they are already practicing direct democracy on the streets for a month and a half already, and not just in NY, but all the occupy movements across the world are organizing using the internet and direct democracy, it's just too obvious.

[-] 1 points by nickhowdy (1104) 13 years ago

I joined also...They direct democracy in Switzerland also..

[-] 1 points by alfi (469) 13 years ago

Yes they do :), I hope you don't mind, I will compile the best links I already posted on my demand post, and post them here. Is that ok?

[-] 1 points by nickhowdy (1104) 13 years ago

Sure..Why would I mind? Keep rolling...

Important links

International coalition http://e2d-international.org and WikiPedia page about them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E2D_International

http://UPonLocal.com -the owners of this site want the OWS to take over the site. They seem very eager to help. Their site is very good, from what I can see. They are open and ready to go with a live site up right now waiting for us to take it over. They have sent me messages many times urging me to take it! We shall see what happens, in the mean time, go check it out, tell us what you think.

favorite so far http://openassembly.org -the site to go to for voting online and discussions right now, voting site and discussions and forums supported by the OWS.

http://wesower.org -this site says all the right stuff, tho I'm not sure if they have an agenda. I see very little comments on it. Its worth checking.
