as winter closes in on the eastern seaboard, an area well known for it's massive snowfalls, this canadian has become increasingly concerned for his brothers and sisters occupying up down the coast. i understand that many precautions are being taken as winter approaches, and would like to submit a recommendation of my own.
have you heard of quinzhee's?
these wonderful shelters are easy to make and can be life-saving in extreme conditions. here's a link to a guide to building and sleeping in quinzhee's.

i would hate for anyone at the OWS protests, or anywhere, to have to sleep in a cold tent, and moving to indoor locations may not be feasible, or allowed. there may be some issues with the heaviness of the snow, but i think at the very least, quinzhee's should be considered as an option.
Great idea for areas where you have a permanent snow pack and perma frost frozen ground, like in Canada, but not such a good idea for a park in NYC where you get warm breaks in mid-winter and melting and some winters no snow at all but just cold dry days and windy.
yeah i did wonder if the warm breaks might be an issue, but the sheer volume of snowfall you guys get made me think that you should make the snow work for you.
Some winters we get scant snowfall and other are heavy. No predicting snow in the NE. We need a solution for these folks that is not snow dependent. Thanks though for the suggestion.
