Forum Post: A List of Accomplishments?

Posted 13 years ago on Nov. 30, 2011, 7:29 a.m. EST by theonewhoknits (18)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

One of the sceptics cries that I see lately is "nothing is coming out of this" or "they need to stop camping and focus on making a difference". I know that things have come out of this movement. Perhaps we should be compiling a list or something of example of changes the occupations have made in their cities, or even within their occupations through general assemblies and true democracy. What do you think?

Found it. I had to hunt through yesterdays history. I can assure you it took some digging.

What the Occupy Movement has Accomplished

[-] 1 points by MitchK (305) 13 years ago

Based on that list mmmmm nothing changed.

[-] 1 points by JesseHeffran (3903) 13 years ago

i guess it is just your perspective that has not changed. read a few history book, and you'll see a difference. debate your perceived adversary, and you'll get a clue. Believe you are the all knowing shit, and shit will knowingly never change.

  • 6) Has a provided a forum for the amplification of voice of resistance to the Keystone pipeline which has led to Obama postponing its construction

That in itself is a significant achievement. It's one to watch.

[-] 2 points by MitchK (305) 13 years ago

Yeah well sorry thats true...oh wait the OWS movment started when? The pipline oppostions started ,when? Again OWS nothing to do with it...Next

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 13 years ago

wait . . . wait . . .

what did she say?

Has a provided a forum

for the amplification

of voice of resistance to

oo, yer gonna make me google . . . I'll be back . . .

I believe the bottom link is the one you are looking for . . .

Wait - Wait -

that bottom link is dated August 30 - I'm not at all sure the Occupy DC had set up shop by that date - so maybe it's a bit inappropriate to just imply that Hansen was participating in an Occupy event.

But it was an Event.

And it DID Occupy.

And he did get arrested.

AS it happens, I participated in a March in Burlington, and a speak out, where this issue was featured prominently. Can't really say now which came first - the march, or the President's tabling of the pipeline until after election.

[-] 1 points by MitchK (305) 13 years ago

OK so what you are saying this Scientest was the reason for the delay? This Hansen who has nothing to do with OWS but a person who is an environmentalist, wich I happen to agree with soe issues of his, but what about the fatc that since inception this has been tried to be stopped...infact one OIL REFINERY COMPANY in 2009 sued to stop it...lol..yes my friend this is going on long before OWS. Yes HANSESN may have been arrested but again what did OWS have to do with that. The people who care about THAT issue did it. YOU(being part of it) from what I understand from above.

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 13 years ago

number 6: Has a provided a forum for the amplification of voice of resistance to

I dunno, it looks like English to me, and I don't find any ambiguity in that statement, nor do I find anything that does not fit the facts.

[-] 1 points by MitchK (305) 13 years ago

I see YOU, Hansen, Environmentalists who oppose the project, citing greenhouse-gas emissions and risks of a spill along the 1,711-mile (4,346- kilometer) route are the ones whos voices.....not the OWSs movement or issue of " 1% rich corporations corrupt govt, yada yada yada" having ANYTHING to do with it...I give "you guys" the "credit" for that.

[-] 1 points by theonewhoknits (18) 13 years ago

Thanks!

[-] 0 points by Glaucon (296) 13 years ago

Hmmm... Many points could be debated in that list. It seems quite subjective, and some points like number 1 are simply not true. And, where did number ten come from "10. Shown cities how to create lively town centers"??? Almost all the other points could be debated, but I'll leave it at that.

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 13 years ago

I dunno about that. This movement gave voice to the possibility of people moving their money to co-ops. Others did too, I am sure.

In a society as large as ours, with the natural compartmentalization - information silos and the like - that does take place, I do not think it unreasonable at all to consider that Occupy's advocacy on that issue did have a positive impact.

Can Occupy take credit for the sum of public response? Not likely - a fact that I hope we all can take firm hold of as we go forward.

The necessary changes will require all of us.

[-] 2 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 13 years ago

Who has the link of accomplishments?

There is one - and I've lost the page.

Anybody got that link?

[-] 1 points by theonewhoknits (18) 13 years ago

I would love to see it. I think it's SO important to be able to boast about everything that's come out of the movement!

[-] 1 points by SteveNOhio (11) 13 years ago

darn, if you could just control the masses negative thoughts about you.

[-] 1 points by SteveNOhio (11) 13 years ago

How bout the thousands of changes involved people have made for 200 plus years. Without pooping in a park.

[-] 1 points by MitchK (305) 13 years ago

My list of what came from the OWS movement....

(People meaning the .0001% "speaking" for the 99%)

People do not know what the issue(s) are

People can not stick to an agenda

People can not think or learn for themselves

People do not understand english

People just want to be part of SOMETHING ,ANYTHING

People can not or wont to take responsibility

People do not know the difference between Morals and Legality

People do not use an openmind

People do not want to work

People show they need to be "guided" by a higher authority

Man can I go on forever the sub sections to each of those on the list can WHEW blow your mind...lol..And sadly say its ashame I am for change of some of our govt policy and laws, this movement did none of that..I guess its ALL in the way you look at things,HUH?

[-] 0 points by April (3196) 13 years ago

6.) They've given new meaning to - The Onion Farm of Confusion.

[-] 1 points by MitchK (305) 13 years ago

true that April

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 13 years ago

ok truth time. Did you Google it?

[-] 1 points by MitchK (305) 13 years ago

No not yet but just the fact that the word confusion is in there I need to agree...I will look it up now though.. onion layers and layers...that might have something to do with it layers of confusion? I will go look.

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 13 years ago

Exactly! I thought of the layers things too! I think we're having a mind meld!

[-] 1 points by MitchK (305) 13 years ago

ok need help here I googled the onion farm of confusion ....I got someone who had a blonde moment and she got seeds but no onions,a book or something about a girl named annie who was abused ( an it was kiiling me reading it), alot of recipes ( that I might tryout) and farming stuff (living in brooklyn does me no good)...lol

[-] 1 points by MitchK (305) 13 years ago

mmmmmm...so are you a vulcan?...lol...JEEZ I never thought a comment like that would come out of my mouth....something making me look like a trekky....lol

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 13 years ago

I don't think so! Because I don't know what that is. Don't spend too much time googling because I just made it up. : ) I did google it though just to check it out. It might be useful to anyone growing root vegetables.

I figure if OWS can make ridiculous claims like - there is no leader and we don't need a leader - then I can make up silly nonsense stuff too!

[-] 1 points by MitchK (305) 13 years ago

hell yeah April BUT I have to say break down your oinion farm confusion theory/quote.

Onions = layers layers = never know what is under there going to pop up

Farm of onions= ALOT of onions meaning ALOT of layers

Alot of layers with no true guidance or sticking to a mission issue can cause confusion.

The Onion Farm of Confusion I LOVE IT...go copyright it...wait that would be capitolism....ooops watch out they might get you/me for saying that

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 13 years ago

I am so sorry!! I should have come clean earlier! I did not mean to send you on a wild google chase. If it makes you feel any better I googled it too! But I love what you found! You found more than I did. I am laughing so hard I'm about to cry!

I had no idea that my silly nonsense could be so deep! Thanks to you - I feel like a philosopher or something. Maybe the OWS ptb will use it to rename the movement. I would let them use it for free even! Afterall, its for a good cause. All in the name of ending government corruption.

Oh my gosh I'm having another one. Root vegetable = gettting to the root of the problem!

[-] 1 points by MitchK (305) 13 years ago

Keep it up April I might just take these without your knowledge and exploit it..but than give you our profit from it....lol

BTW how long you been a vegetarian?...lol

[-] 1 points by April (3196) 13 years ago

I give you most of the credit - because you recognized the potential! All I ask in return is that you use it for good! Which I know you would. : )

Vegetarian- lol. At the rate that the Evil Banksters are stealing all of our money, we might all be looking at vegetarianism soon. We'll have nothing left except our vegetable gardens! And knowing the Evil Banksters, they'll probably find a way to steal that from us too! Maybe they'll be kind enough to leave us a few onions if were super nice to them.

Onions can make you cry = OWS chaos makes me want to cry a little bit too.

  1. They've made some people more aware of some of the problems in America.
    1. They demonstrated that direct democracy doesn't work well.
    2. They demonstrated that if you squat public property and claim it as yours, you will eventually get evicted.

Anything else?

[-] 1 points by Cocreator (306) 13 years ago

who is they? We Are One, WE ARE THE PEOPLE Surrender Now,tell us what you know, and maybe we'll go easy on you..

[-] 1 points by theonewhoknits (18) 13 years ago

4) They seem to attract a lot of negative energy from people with lots of time on their hands. :)

[-] 0 points by Glaucon (296) 13 years ago

True indeed.

5) They managed to convince banks to cancel their idea of adding a 5$ charge on some accounts.

What else? Let's make a complete list.

BTW - You should post this points in your main post as we add them.

[-] 1 points by theonewhoknits (18) 13 years ago

Is it awful if I can't tell if you're kidding or not?

[-] -1 points by Glaucon (296) 13 years ago

I am serious. I like your idea. Let's make the most scientific unbiased list of what Occupy has accomplished. You should provide some ideas since you started this thread. It would help if you kept track of the ideas that come up in the comments in your main post.

I was thinking and I realized that my number 3 (proving that you will get evicted if you squat on public property and claim it as yours) was perhaps an already known fact before Occupy. Although, the did prove it once again by testing it. Let's modify it. What about number 2) Do you think direct democracy was shown to be flawed before Occupy tried it? I'll leave it in for now until I get your answer. I'm removing the 5 (bank) because this wasn't directly caused by Occupy.

Thus far we have:

  1. They've made some people more aware of some of the problems in America. (fact)
  2. They proved once more that if you squat public property for a long time, you will get evicted. (open to debate)
  3. They seem to attract a lot of negative energy from people with lots of time on their hands. (fact)
  4. Improvement of shit buckets for smelly hippies (open to debate)
  5. They've given new meaning to - The Onion Farm of Confusion. (fact)
[-] 1 points by theonewhoknits (18) 13 years ago

When you say direct democracy, what do you mean? The process that occupy uses to make decisions?

If so, I think it's a process that they're working on to make better. It's evolving.

[-] 0 points by Glaucon (296) 13 years ago

Good point. We can wait a little longer. Perhaps they can make it work. Let's remove it from the list.

[-] 1 points by technoviking (484) 13 years ago

I believe change.org was behind this, not OWS.

but i guess as long as nobody notices then it's ok to claim credit for anything.

[-] 0 points by Glaucon (296) 13 years ago

You're right. We should cancel number 5.
